Key Responsibilities of the Cardiac Sonographer:

  • Prepare patients for procedures by gathering clinical history and physical findings related to cardiac health.
  • Perform a variety of cardiac ultrasound procedures, from basic to advanced, ensuring accurate, high-quality results.
  • Identify and define cardiac abnormalities, adjusting the examination scope as necessary to address specific clinical questions.
  • Assist physicians in procedure rooms and operating rooms, providing echocardiographic studies to support complex procedures.
  • Perform transesophageal studies in collaboration with cardiologists, calculating measurements and sterilizing equipment as needed.
  • Maintain and manage Echocardiography Lab equipment, ensuring functionality and reporting any malfunctions.
  • Act as a resource for staff, physicians, and students, offering guidance on procedures, techniques, and equipment usage.
  • Support the echocardiography quality coordinator to maintain adherence to quality protocols and assist with ICAEL accreditation.

Minimum Job Requirements for the Cardiac Sonographer:

  • Graduate of an accredited program or 2 years of experience above the minimum qualifications.
  • Certification in one of the following: Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through CCI, or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through ARDMS.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required within 30 days of hire or transfer).
  • Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and approved clinical protocols for cardiovascular ultrasound examinations.
  • Skilled use of sonographic instrumentation and techniques, with the ability to adapt procedures based on patient needs.
  • Proficiency in infection control practices and patient confidentiality laws.
