Overview: We are hiring a Senior Linux Systems Team Lead to guide and direct all aspects of the design, implementation, and maintenance of our Linux-based infrastructure for our team! As Team Lead, you'll work closely with other group members within ITSD and CCSD, and will provide technical support to scientific users, instrument scientists, and scientific associates at HFIR and SNS. This position resides in the Neutron Systems Engineering & Support (NSES) group in the Research Computing Support division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). NSES provides technical expertise and computing support to Neutron Science Directorates which operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), and the Neutron Upgrades Project Office (NUPO). Major Duties/Responsibilities: Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to the team as well as their performance management (annual performance and development plans, year-end assessments, etc.).
Keep customers advised of major IT initiatives, identifying how they might affect the directorate operations.
Oversee the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of Linux servers and associated software applications that align with customer requirements and industry best practices.
Lead the selection and purchase of hardware and software systems.
Lead the management of system resources including network, storage, memory, and CPU usage.
Lead the resolution of complex technical issues and incidents.
Address vulnerabilities and implement security measures.
Monitor system performance and proactively identify and address bottlenecks.
Implement automation solutions and scripting to streamline system administration tasks.
Develop and document system and service diagrams, system configurations, procedures, troubleshooting guides and software build/install notes.
Manage On-call rotation to which includes troubleshooting user issues and after-hours support.

Basic Qualifications: A BS in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, business or a related field of study and eight (8) to twelve (12) years of aligned professional experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered. Ten (10) years of demonstrated experience as a Linux System Engineer, with at least two (2) years experinece in a leadership role. Demonstrated professional technical expertise with Linux system administration, preferably Red Hat. Experience with creating advanced scripts using BASH or other scripting languages is required. Experience with Linux system administration automation tools. Experience with Virtual Machine deployment, preferably VMWare. Experience with computational cluster design and administration. Experience with petabyte-scale data storage. Experience with configuration management tools (e.g. Ansible, Puppet).
Experience in computer networking and network security.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a scientific research computing environment, National Laboratory, or other large-scale user facility. Experience training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical environments. Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians. Special Requirements: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
