Requisition Id 13985 Overview: We are seeking a Radiological Engineering Support Team Lead who will focus on the radioactive waste characterization effort for disposal of radioactive waste. This position resides in the Transporation and Waste Management Division of the Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As part of our support services team, you will Major Duties/Responsibilities: Provide leadership for the Waste Management Specialists and Analytic Sampling Program in providing high-quality radiological characterization guidance and documentation support.
Provide input to the Transportation and Waste Management Division leadership team and division Director.
Provide expert technical direction as an ORNL Subject Matter Expert for the characterization and disposition of all ORNL radioactive streams including radioactive waste generated by nuclear accelerators, nuclear reactors, isotope production, radiochemical research, irradiated nuclear fuel testing, irradiated metal interrogation, environmental cleanup, laboratory analysis, and biological research.
Attend conferences to present technical papers and participate in DOE site assessments and audits as requested in support of the DOE mission.
Lead ORNL's audit preparation for audits and assessment conducted by DOE and DOE contractors of the radioactive waste management program.
Lead the development of new characterization techniques and equipment to support characterization and packaging of high activity radioactive waste while balancing impacts of ALARA, DOT criteria and facility limitations.
Guide the development of peer-reviewed waste management calculations and technical position papers.
Guide the creation and editing of waste management procedures and spreadsheet application tools.
Interface with treatment, storage and disposal facilities (TSDFs).
Develop the next generation of ORNL radioactive waste management staff. Basic Qualifications: A BS degree in a science or engineering discipline
8+ years of experience in radioactive waste management programs and operations.
Extensive experience with the review and application of laboratory analysis to characterize the radioactive and chemical constituents of waste.
Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel.
Experience in characterizing radioactive waste that is generated by nuclear accelerators, nuclear reactors, hot cell facilities, and chemical separation processes.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must be capable of obtaining a DOE "Q" clearance. Preferred Qualifications: Radioactive waste management experience at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Degree in Engineering or Nuclear Engineering field
Leadership of radioactive waste management programs.
Experience at multiple DOE or DOD sites.
Experience in characterizing radioactive waste that is also regulated under RCRA and TSCA.
Experience with reviewing gamma spectrum analysis.
Experience in the use of Microshield software application.
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs Special Requirements: HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge. Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
