Requisition Id 13846 Due to the security clearance requirements of this position we can only consider US citizens Overview: We are hiring a Data Center Engineer who will focus on the design, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the physical and logical infrastructure within the Enterprise Data Centers! You will also coordinate hardware installations, diagnose and resolve data center systems, ensure optimal power, space, and cooling, and support the efficient operation of data center facilities. Additionally, you will collaborate with IT operations, network, and facilities to ensure the data center meets the needs of the organization while ensuring compliance with industry and organization best practices and standards. This position requires being available for on-call rotations and occasional after-hours work as needed. This position resides in the Digital Hosting Services team of the Enterprise Operations group of the Digital Services Infrastructure & Operations division of the Information Technology Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Major Duties/Responsibilities: Data Center Operations: Coordinate the installation of servers, storage systems, network devices, and other hardware, ensuring that all hardware adheres to ORNL ECC power, space, and cooling requirements. Monitor the performance and reliability of data center equipment and other infrastructure.
Ensure efficient and reliable power, cooling, and environmental systems are operational.
Perform regular data center system checks, troubleshoot technical issues, and resolve hardware or other failures.
Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for all data center equipment.
Work closely with IT and network teams to ensure seamless integration between data center operations and enterprise systems.
Monitor and manage power, space, cooling, and capacity planning. Security and Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, security policies, and government regulations (e.g., NFPA, DOE/ORNL safety policies).
Implement and maintain robust physical security protocols to safeguard data and equipment.
Monitor access control systems and surveillance tools to ensure data center security. Project Management: Plan and deliver new hardware installations, upgrades, migrations, and decommissioning projects.
Collaborate with vendors and internal teams ensuring timely and efficient delivery of infrastructure solutions.
Document data center system configurations, procedures, and project timelines for internal reference and audit purposes.
Contribute to optimizing Data Center resource utilization by enhancing the efficiency of power, space, and cooling management. Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity: Develop and maintain data center disaster recovery and backup solutions.
Ensure that redundant systems, power sources, and failover processes are in place and tested regularly.
Coordinate incident response protocols and play a key role in business continuity planning. Collaboration and Support: Provide support to IT teams and network engineers for data center operations.
Serve as a point of escalation for resolving sophisticated technical issues related to the data center.
Offer technical guidance and training to junior staff and other departments when needed. Basic Qualifications: A BS in information technology, information systems, computer science, computer engineering, business, science, or a related field of study and a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years demonstrated experience working in a data center environment (or similar IT infrastructure role) with electrical and HVAC experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered. Due to the clearance requirements of this role, candidates must be US citizens.
Must be available for on-call rotations and occasional after-hours work as needed.
Solid understanding of electrical, UPS, and HVAC and power distribution systems in data centers.
Strong familiarity with Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tools.
Familiarity with ITIL framework and standard methodologies for service management. Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving skills and ability to resolve issues under pressure.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work. Preferred Qualifications: NFPA 70E (Arc Flash) Electrical Safety certification.
Data Center Energy Practitioner (DCEP). Special Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
