Brooklyn Public Library's Adult Learning Program is seeking part-time ESOL Instructors who are skilled and committed to providing high-quality ESOL instruction to Beginner level English Language Learners from varying demographic backgrounds.

Strong candidates will have excellent interpersonal skills, a passion for seeing others succeed, and a determination to facilitate learning through proven methods of instructional delivery. Successful candidates will also have a healthy appreciation for the diversity of adult ESOL students, as well as be able to quickly establish strong rapport and trust. Lastly, favorable candidates will demonstrate confidence with humlity, the ability to lead as well as follow, an eagerness to learn through both success and failure, and the capacity to work alone or within a team.

Beginner level ESOL classes will have students who range from NRS levels 1-3. This will require the part-time ESOL Instructor be able to differentiate instruction so that all students succeed. Student retention will be one of the main indicators of teacher performance, as well as pre- and post-assessments on the BEST Plus Test.

Beginner ESOL classes meet for six hours a week, with one paid hour prep time.

Responsibilities:
Provide ABE, ESOL, or Fast Track small group instruction for beginning level adult participants to develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, math, and workforce basics

Develop and implement student centered contextualized lesson plans based on participant's need that engage participants and assist them in navigating the activities of their lives

Beome BEST Plus trained so as to understand the primary assessment tool

Post weekly learning materials via Google Classroom and collaborate with instructional team members (case managers and program assistants)

Monitor attendance records of each participant and progress; produce progress reports as needed, submit quarterly course overviews, and ensure data is entered in a timely manner

Communicate with participants regarding upcoming events, absenteeism, etc.

Participate in professional development, staff meetings and work very closely with case managers and other program staff to deliver effective programming that motivates participants and succeed in the program

Evaluate and conference participants on their progress mid-term and end of term

Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree required; certificate or Master's degree in teaching and/or related field

Minimum of 2 yrs. teaching experience, beginning level preferred (online teaching is a plus)

Strong knowledge of Adult Basic Education and Literacy approaches

Preferred Skills

Leadership - strong leader/facilitator, able to maintain virtual classroom discipline and successfully guide students through individualized lesson plans

Motivational skills- use motivational skills and strategies to encourage students to learn and keep them engaged in their own education

Communication skills- have strong verbal and written communication skills to instruct and educate students and grade written work

Computer skills- because of the internet-based nature of the job, must have excellent computer skills and can work with multiple types of learning management platforms such as Schoology and Google Classroom, and software programs

Analytical skills- use analytical skills to evaluate student work and ongoing student progress

Collaborate - must be able to work as a team of instructional members to ensure students have a positive learning experience

The pay rate is $35 per hour at 7 hours each week for an 11 week cycle and up to 14 hours a year for professional development.

Class Schedules & Class locations Vary:

Morning: M/W 10:00am-1:00pm

Evening: T/TH 5:00pm-8:00pm

Weekend: Saturdays 10:00am-4:00pm

This is a grant funded opportunity through June 30, 2025. Contracts are potentially renewed annually based on performance.
