Job Description
The General Maintenance Worker (GMW) is a member of the team managed by the Senior Manager, Facilities Management Team, which maintains all the facilities in Uncommon Schools' New Jersey portfolio in Camden and Newark. The GMW reports to an on-site Facilities Manager (FM) and performs inspections, maintenance, and repairs to ensure that students, staff, and the entire school community are provided a safe, attractive, clean, and healthy educational and work environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform a wide variety of general maintenance and repair tasks as assigned by the FM and the Senior Manager, Facilities
Conduct regular inspections of building systems such as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC
Have basic operating knowledge of a low-pressure boiler, chiller plant, packaged HVAC units, and water circulation systems for these systems
Be familiar with all state and local life safety and building regulations
Prepare and paint walls and woodwork; perform other types of refinishing
Repair or replace VCT, LVT, and ceramic flooring
Build, repair, and install counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, and trim
Undertake minor electrical repairs, including low-voltage PA, and LAN cabling; change light fixtures, switches, outlets, and ballasts
Perform plumbing repairs including but not limited to replacing flushometers, metering cartridges, water fountain filters, sink faucets, and the like
Ensure that work sites and conditions are safe
Respond to emergency situations and perform vital repairs; act as point person during a facility emergency
Consistently employ the work order system, ensuring that all work performed onsite is documented correctly and updated in a timely manner; track, document and maintain all PM inspections and reports for each facility
Ensure work orders are completed and detailed accurately
Recommend repairs, outlining the work needed and specifications required of an outside contractor
Maintain an adequate supply of parts used for repairs, and request needed supplies through established procedures
Remove snow and ice by shoveling, plowing, and/or sanding walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps when needed
Report immediately to the FM any damage or vandalism to facilities or theft of equipment
Display a cooperative and pleasant demeanor, particularly when in the presence of staff, students, and community visitors
Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines
Serve as a role model for students and staff by demonstrating a positive attitude, committed work ethic, and appropriate attire and grooming
Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend any required meetings
Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school
Adhere to federal statutes and regulations, New Jersey school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Uncommon Schools policies and procedures, and contractual obligations
Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the supervisors, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation
