Job Title: Assistant Controller

Location: Grand Rapids, MI
Department: Finance/Accounting
Reports To: Controller or CFO

Position Summary:
The Assistant Controller is responsible for supporting the Controller in managing the day-to-day accounting operations of the manufacturing company. This role ensures accurate financial reporting and compliance with internal policies and external regulations. The Assistant Controller will supervise accounting staff, handle complex accounting issues, and assist in the preparation of financial statements, budgets, and other financial reports.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Financial Reporting and Analysis:

    • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
    • Review and ensure accuracy of general ledger entries, reconciliations, and journal entries.
    • Perform financial analysis and variance analysis, identifying trends and making recommendations for corrective actions.
    • Prepare and present financial reports to management, highlighting key financial metrics and business performance.
  2. Cost Accounting and Inventory Management:

    • Support cost accounting functions, including cost of goods sold analysis, inventory valuation, and standard cost updates.
    • Monitor and analyze production costs, material usage, and overhead allocations to ensure accurate product costing.
    • Collaborate with the operations team to analyze and report on manufacturing variances and efficiency improvements.
  3. Internal Controls and Compliance:

    • Assist in developing and maintaining effective internal controls over financial reporting.
    • Ensure compliance with internal policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
    • Support the Controller in preparing documentation for internal and external audits.
    • Assist in the preparation and review of tax filings and ensure compliance with all tax regulations.
  4. Month-End and Year-End Close:

    • Coordinate and oversee the month-end and year-end closing processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
    • Review account reconciliations, journal entries, and adjustments for accuracy and completeness.
    • Assist in analyzing financial results and preparing management reports.
  5. Budgeting and Forecasting:

    • Assist in developing annual budgets and periodic forecasts in collaboration with department heads.
    • Monitor actual results against budget and provide insights on variances and trends.
    • Participate in strategic planning and long-term financial projections.
  6. Team Supervision and Development:

    • Supervise and mentor a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance and performance feedback.
    • Train and develop staff to ensure the team's technical competencies and knowledge of best practices.
    • Delegate tasks effectively and ensure alignment with departmental goals.
  7. Process Improvement and System Optimization:

    • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement strategies to streamline accounting operations.
    • Support the implementation and optimization of accounting software and ERP systems.
    • Collaborate with IT and other departments to ensure system integration and efficiency.
  8. Financial Support and Decision-Making:

    • Provide financial support and analysis to other departments and senior management for decision-making purposes.
    • Conduct ad hoc financial analyses as needed to support various business initiatives.
    • Assist the Controller in developing policies, procedures, and accounting strategies to support company growth.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA certification preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong background in general accounting and cost accounting. Manufacturing industry experience is highly preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of GAAP and cost accounting principles.
    • Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks).
    • Advanced Excel skills and experience with financial analysis and modeling.
    • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
    • Effective communication and leadership abilities.
  • Competencies: Attention to detail, ability to work under deadlines, teamwork, and proactive mindset.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily an office-based role, with occasional visits to production facilities as needed.
  • May require extended hours during financial close periods and audits.
