Job description

Overview:
The Purchased Transportation Manager supports the XGS transportation network by identifying and negotiating pricing for carriers, final mile delivery agents, and local cartage providers to procure exceptional safety and service metrics to XGS and their customers. Serves as liaison between the carriers/agents and the XGS team. The optimal candidate must possess the ability to work independently while having the ability to adapt to market volatility and company initiatives. This role reports to XGS Senior Manager Transportation.

Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Liaise with third-party logistics providers, negotiate contracts, and manage relationships.

Coordinate and manage logistics by overseeing the transportation of goods, ensuring timely and efficient delivery.

Negotiate capacity, rates, and operational expectations with partner carriers.

Prepare and manage transportation budgets and implement cost saving strategies.

Monitor performance by tracking and analyzing transportation metrics to identify areas of improvement.

Ensure all transportation activities comply with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

Identify, address, and resolve any issues related to transportation, including delays and customer complaints.

Maintain knowledge of company safety policies and procedures, escalating partner issues to XGS leadership when appropriate.

Ensure adequate spotted trailer levels are maintained to meet anticipated needs based on projected business levels.

Work with XGS claims department to resolve any issues regarding damage, delays, or lost cargo.

Communicate clear performance expectations to ensure a high-performance work environment and proactively provide specific, balanced, and timely coaching to reinforce and encourage high performance and promote a culture of teamwork.

Communicate and coordinate within operations, billing and other teams to accomplish the work required.

Stay current on industry regulations, trends, and best practices to provide XGS a competitive edge versus our competition.

Qualifications:

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, or a related field.

Proven experience in transportation management, preferably with outsourced logistics.

Prior experience in freight sales, carrier sales, or similar role.

Exceptional organizational, negotiation, and communication skills. Proficiency in logistics software and systems.

In-depth understanding of transportation regulations and best practices.

Experience with Microsoft Office.

AS400 experience preferred.

Tableau / Power BI

Meticulous in planning and executing transportation operations.

Ability to problem-solve grounded in strong analytical skills to identify and resolve logistical challenges.

Ability to work independently as well as lead and manage a team effectively.

Ability to multitask and prioritize workflow.

Ability to maintain professional communication and ability to project a positive company image to the public.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Consistently maintains excellent personal attendance records

Sit for extended periods of time

Occasionally stoop, kneel or crouch

Manual dexterity to operate a computer and other office machines

Clear and understandable speaking voice for the purposes of telephone communication
