Job description
General Summary
The interventional radiologic technologist performs radiographic examinations of the highest possible quality while limiting radiation exposure and using conventional, fluoroscopic, portable, and c-arm radiology equipment. Assists with diagnostic/interventional procedures to patients of all ages, under the supervision of department Radiologist. Complies with measures to assure that patient/customer satisfaction results are consistently maintained. Appropriately supervises students according to competency level. Complies with and provides leadership in maintaining an environment that supports our philosophy and values.

- Identifies opportunities to improve patient experience. Participates in projects/programs designed to enhance service delivery and patient satisfaction.

- Identifies opportunities to improve the Environment of Care, and patient and staff safety. Participates in projects and programs designed to create a safe environment to avoid error.
Job Specific Duties
- Functions in the role of Radiology Technologist.
- Performs all radiological aspects in the Interventional Radiology environment.
- Serves as an expert resource in the use of ionizing radiation. Ensures proper use of the radiation and serves as a working leader to follow all hospital radiation safety regulations to ensure patient and personal safety.
- Confirms patient identification and obtains clinical history.
- Assists physician with performing Interventional Radiology diagnostic exams on patients of all levels of acuity according to physician orders and departmental policies and procedures.
- Performs veni-puncture for administration of IV contrast.
- Maintains inventory and orders radiology supplies as needed.
- Participates in supply management.
- Participates in the department's quality assessment and improvement plan.
- Participates in various functional teams within Radiology.
- Assists in orientation of new staff.
- Assumes responsibility for professional growth and continuing education.
- Actively seeks to resolve customer concerns in a timely manner and provides follow-up to the customer.
- In collaboration with registered nurse, provides care to the adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and their families. Whenever applicable, demonstrates understanding of the needs of specific age groups in terms of their physical and motor development, psychosocial development and intellectual/language development.
- Ensures proper dispositions of patients before and after procedure including, but not limited to, placing of electrodes, defib pads, NIBP, invasive pressure systems, SAO2, etc.
- Displays open, clear, concise and professional intra-procedural communication with all care providers regarding care of the patient.
- Assures the acquisition of a maximally diagnostic exam through manipulation of the radiologic parameters.
- Understands blood sample, tissue sample or other bodily fluid gathering, preparation and handling.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of both sterile and basic surgical techniques.
- Possesses a complete and thorough understanding of the operation of all patient monitors including EKG, invasive pressure, NIBP, SAO2, etc.
- Assists the physician in the x-ray role during Interventional Radiology procedures.
- Assists physicians in the scrub role according to prescribed standards.
- Assists the physician with the x-ray equipment within the procedure room.
- Assists physicians in the monitoring of patients EKG, NIBP, invasive pressure systems, SAO2.
- Sets-up and establishes sterile table complete with all required supplies and instrumentation.
- Performs additional duties within the department such as patient charging, scheduling, supply stocking, etc.
- Follows all hospital radiation safety regulations to ensure patient and personal safety.
- Documents appropriate information pertaining to the peri-procedural process.
- Assumes responsibility for use and care of all equipment and the reporting of equipment malfunction.
- Maintains proper stocking of supplies & re-ordering of specialty equipment within Minor procedures room.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
- Covers shifts as needed.
Professional Development
- Attends department meetings, mandatory in-services and other continuing education offerings.
- Appropriately supervises, instructs and evaluates radiologic technology students as requested.
- Contributes to the department's fiscal management by appropriate use of human and material resources.
- Supports unit and division committees, task forces and project activities.
- Participates in quality improvement activities and incorporates recommendations into practice.
- Maintains professional education requirements as defined by State of Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing.
- Maintains quality standards, i.e., safety, hazardous waste and infection control.
Department Specific Accountabilities
- Maintains department specific accountabilities as determined, maintained, and housed within each unit's Scope of Service.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education
- Knowledge of radiological standards and procedures normally acquired through completion of a diploma from an approved AMA school of radiological technology, an Associate's Degree in Radiology, or other manner to meet requirements of the ARRT and State of Wisconsin Radiographer licensure.
Experience
- Minimum of two years' working full time in Diagnostic Radiology necessary to enhance and develop skills, with previous experience in Cath Lab/Special Procedures preferred.
Required
- Possesses State of Wisconsin Radiographer license.
- Current BLS certification or obtained within 90 days of hire - All clinical personnel in identified job codes are required to maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) training through independent study, online manikin and knowledge testing. An acceptable training program is the Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider course from the American Heart Association or the client Professional Rescuer Program with AED.
Other
- ACLS certification beneficial.
- Possesses an in-depth knowledge of Cath Lab monitoring systems.
- Possesses complete and thorough understanding of the operation of all equipment and patient monitors including set-up and function: EKG, invasive pressure, NIBP, SAO2, etc.
- Possesses a thorough understanding of EKG rhythm.
- Possesses a working knowledge of both hospital and department specific computer systems.
