Job description

Duties Ensures work is done properly and efficiently. Passes on to workers instructions received from supervisor and, as needed, demonstrates proper work methods. Ensures that equipment, materials, tools and/or supplies are fully functional and available when needed. Ensures that all workers have enough work and are fully utilized. Answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directions. Makes, repairs, and installs storage and shipping items such as boxes, small crates, pallets, dividers, assorted skids and storage bins using wood, wood composites and substitutes, steel bracing, and appropriate packing materials. Spot checks completed work for compliance with supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Maintains, as required, written records of production, work hours, costing, attendance, etc.; record keeping may require use of a computer. Orients and trains new employees. Makes suggestions for performance awards. Provides information on potential performance problems. Refers to applicable instructions for packing. Works from local process specifications, blueprints, sketches, drawings, or from written or verbal instructions, in manufacturing wood crates, boxes and skids. Determines requirements for special jobs, such as selecting materials, designing boxes, crates, etc., including trusses, bracing, strapping and construction of necessary containers, packing, labeling and preparing items for shipment or storage. Uses proper handling equipment for transfer and provides necessary cleanup of work site. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license/certification to operate government vehicles. Must be able to obtain and maintain required hazardous materials handling certifications. May be required to obtain/maintain Radiological certification. This position and any future selections from this announcement may be used to fill various shifts located within DLA Distribution, Bremerton, WA Qualifications Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Same as work led. Performs tiring work involving standing for major portion of the work shift. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers with a weight limit up to 90 pounds and/or using lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes. Requires conducting work in stooping, bending or cramped positions. Requires extensive use of arms and hands to operate hand tools, portable equipment and machinery or managing construction materials and aviation, submarine, surface ship, and other parts. Working Conditions: Same as work led. Incumbent works in shop areas or in exposed, outdoor areas. Work involves exposure to uncomfortable heat, cold, drafty or damp conditions. There may also be nose or throat irritation caused from work generated dust, as well as excessive noise levels. Skin abrasions, nicks or cuts to hands or fingers, and blisters from handling materials, equipment and tooling are all common to woodworking and could occur. The incumbent is required to wear mandatory protective safety equipment and clothing such as safety shoes, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs, respirators, or gloves.
