JOB SUMMARY

The Lead Fitness Assistant, under the direction and supervision of the Doig Health Club & Spa Manager (Health Club Manager), is responsible for assisting all members in identifying and achieving their wellness and goals. The Lead Fitness Assistant maintains accurate record of equipment maintenance and service and works with the Health Club Manager to develop staff and program schedules. All work is performed collaboratively with, and in support of, other services offered by Williamsburg Landing.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts Fitness Assessments. Reviews health/medical history with member and discusses any restrictions or limitations that are noted on the member's physician consent form. Assists members in developing attainable goals. Makes appropriate recommendations for exercise. If appropriate, conveys information about other programs or special events available at Williamsburg Landing.
  • Creates personalized exercise routines for members, taking into consideration current recommendations for exercise as it pertains to ACSM guidelines, their medical history, fitness goals, and current fitness status; employee should also have knowledge of special populations and exercise recommendations.
  • Administers fitness tests. Determines appropriate fitness test to administer. Reviews fitness test results with member and provides meaningful feedback. Recommends and updates testing protocol as appropriate with manager approval.
  • Conducts personalized fitness orientations. Performs orientation of cardiovascular and strength training equipment. Instructs members about appropriate safety protocols.
  • Serves as a liaison for personal training services; schedules and assigns clients to personal trainers based on clients' needs and trainer's area of expertise and availability.
  • Main point of contact for Rehab Referral Forms. Completes Rehab Orientations for members who are transitioning to the Health Club after completing Physical Therapy.
  • Maintains accurate record of equipment maintenance and staff trainings/certifications, updates maintenance log of specific dates for when issues are reported and when repaired, and communicates with the Health Club Manager about any needed repairs. Coordinates preventative maintenance of gym equipment.
  • Provides input on equipment updates, future purchases, and requests for equipment by employees, personal trainers, or members of the Health Club & Spa
  • Assists in development of staff and program schedules, including special events; promotes Healthy Balance Program by providing information to employees, monthly promotions, etc. Assists with incentive updates during the Healthy Balance period.
  • Provides input on the hiring of Fitness Assistants and Personal Trainers.
  • Monitors members' continual wellness goals/needs and when possible, facilitates services and/or programs to meet those goals/needs.
  • Provides one-on-one assistance to members with special needs or when requested.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment. Completes all assigned cleaning duties. Performs frequent visual inspections of equipment to ensure cleanliness and proper function.
  • Promotes the use of Health Club services when necessary. Engages with members to promote the importance of Fitness Re-Tests and/or exercise program adjustments.
  • Inspects locker rooms and cleans as needed.
  • Supervises member and guest usage of Cardio/Fitness area by continuously walking through the area and being available.
  • Answers questions in a customer-friendly manner. Notices where members may be interested in trying different equipment and provides appropriate support.
  • Takes blood pressures and body measurements as required or upon request.
  • Ensures members and guests follow posted rules and policies.
  • Develops relationships with members. Develops rapport by maintaining an open door to members. Answers questions and help resolve member problems and conflicts. Informs manager of all problems and concerns
  • Monitors members' health needs as appropriate and provides appropriate member updates to staff.
  • Follows established policies and procedures for Incident Reporting.
  • Attends and fully participates in assigned committee meetings as well as other meetings as required/requested. Represent Williamsburg Landing and its Wellness Department on community and state committees as deemed appropriate in consultation with supervisor.
  • Makes presentations to promote the Health Club and to educate residents, staff, members of the Health Club and prospective members. Assists in or leads monthly seminars/workshops on health related matters.
  • Complies with all Williamsburg Landing policies and procedures including those addressing conduct, dress, safety, personal hygiene, and attendance.
  • Evaluates work processes and methods and submits recommendations for continuous quality improvement.
  • Attends scheduled training programs for professional development that includes, at a minimum, trainings required by Williamsburg Landing and by regulatory and accrediting bodies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal education in physical education, health science, kinesiology, or related field. Experience working in medical based wellness programs or with older adults. Ability to obtain a related professional fitness certification. Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor certifications preferred. Current CPR/AED and First Aid training certification. Minimum Two years related experience.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of wellness/fitness needs of senior adults and of program design and testing. Able to develop exercise programs to meet individual needs and limitations. Able to safely provide physical assistance to anyone in distress in the area which may include providing CPR, AED, First Aid. General knowledge of physical limitations of older adults is preferred. Able to exercise sound judgment when under stress. Proficient with MS Office to include Word and Excel. Experience using Google suite applications to include Calendar, Sheets, and Docs. Must have valid Virginia driver's license.
