Our geotechnical engineers and geologists specialize in building and transportation infrastructure design, landslides, sinkholes, mine subsidence, slope stability and seepage. Over the last 100+ years, we have completed more than 1,000 geotechnical projects and supported thousands of other projects across the U.S. - from small-scale projects to large, complex highways, bridges, landslide repairs and dams.
Gannett Fleming is looking for a Senior Geotechnical Designer to join our team in Roanoke, VA.
This position entails independent performance of engineering calculations and technical studies for a range of projects, including:
Design and rehabilitation of dams and spillways, as well as dam decommissioning.
Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and floodplain studies.
Designing and evaluating structures like levees, culverts, outfalls, and stormwater management systems.
Conducting stability analyses for dams and other structures.
Performing fieldwork such as dam inspections, construction observations, and subsurface investigation programs.
The engineer in this role is expected to exercise independent judgment in applying design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. They also collaborate with clients and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.
Principal Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Project Coordination: Collaborates with clients and project teams to develop and lay out full designs, details, and project plans.
Technical Calculations: Performs hydrologic/hydraulic calculations, stability analyses, and modeling for dam and waterway structures.
Design Documentation: Prepares detailed design documents including drawings, material quantities, cost estimates, and technical calculations for project segments.
Drawing Review: Reviews design drawings for compliance and accuracy.
Fieldwork and Inspections: Independently leads field reconnaissance activities, dam inspections, and observes construction work, ensuring compliance with design specifications.
Interdisciplinary Coordination: Works with other technical disciplines within the company to ensure the successful completion of projects.
Vendor Evaluation: Reviews vendor submissions to ensure they meet project specifications.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Provides preliminary supervision for junior engineers and technical designers, offering guidance and oversight.
Proposal Support: Assists proposal teams with technical input to support business development efforts.
Client Interaction: Interfaces with clients to gather requirements, present solutions, and maintain good working relationships.
Tools and Techniques:
The engineer will likely need to be proficient in:
Hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software for floodplain and waterway studies.
GIS tools for mapping and spatial analysis.
Design and drafting tools for preparing drawings and specifications.
Key Differences from Entry-Level:
Greater independence in decision-making and project execution.
More extensive field responsibilities, including dam inspections and construction observation.
Preliminary supervisory responsibilities, offering guidance to junior engineers.
Direct client interaction and coordination of multi-disciplinary teams.

Education and Licensing Requirements:
BS in Engineering
Fundamentals of Engineering
In process of obtaining Professional Engineer (PE) License
Training, Skills, Knowledge and/or Experience:
3+ years of applicable experience
Expertise with GIS Proficiency with CADD
Proficiency with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS and SITES
Expertise with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
Good oral and written communications skills
