Pay Basis: Semi-Monthly
Advertised Salary: $61,946 - $82,079 depending on qualifications and experience

Parks, Recreation and Tourism is seeking an individual to be responsible for the oversight and management of the specialized turf areas within the City's properties including athletic fields, municipal facilities, recreation areas and park system.

Some specific duties of the Turf Manager include

  • Recommends, coordinates and implements sustainable turf maintenance plans, new construction and renovations projects.
  • Responsible for the effective supervision and administration of the Turf Maintenance crews including completion of required reports, operating budget preparation and monitoring. Manages staff time for efficiency and planning.
  • Manages and controls assigned inventory, materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Responsible for the effective supervision and administration of assigned staff that includes organization and development of crews, training, work schedules, hiring and interviewing, performance evaluations, employee relations, prioritizing and assigning work, and other related activities.
  • Maintains and reviews timekeeping and other personnel related records. Approves employee leave requests and timecards. Administers employee evaluations and staff objectives. Develops and oversees work schedules of staff to include turf maintenance coverage 7 days a week.
  • Develops, implements, and coordinates short and long-range plans pertaining to specialized turf areas, athletic fields and the park natural turf.
  • Develops and recommends policies and procedures to construct, preserve and maintain turf areas; establishes maintenance and rehabilitation schedules for turfed facilities, recommends internal section organization and schedules; and establishes and implements management systems to effectively meet operating goals and objectives.
  • Provides exceptional internal and external customer service, responds to service requests, and inquires, and addresses complex customer service-related concerns that meets the expectations of the City's Customer Service Initiative.
  • Investigates customer complaints and either resolves the issue or makes recommendations for resolutions to team management.
  • Demonstrates applied knowledge and uses tools, heavy and commercial maintenance equipment and chemical agents utilized in the turf maintenance industry.
  • Trains subordinate staff on equipment operation and proper use of materials.

Required Qualifications: VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT :
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in Agronomy, Turf Grass Management, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of three years of full-time equivalent experience in athletic turf grass maintenance, including experience in the application of fertilizers and pesticides on turf grass, and a minimum of one year of lead or supervisory experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :
Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements and a Certified Applicators License, Class 3A and 3B, within six months of employment.

Also requires a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards .

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extensive Knowledge of principles, methods, tools and practices used in specialized field and turf construction and maintenance to include the proper use and application of herbicides, pesticides, and irrigation systems as well as proper blends of soil mixes.

  • Knowledge of occupational and equipment hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to park and recreational activities and other work related precautions, including OHSA , VOHSA and ADA regulations and requirements.

  • Experience with budget preparations and monitoring.

  • Experience with direct supervision and oversight of multiple person staff.

  • Experience in procurement activities and basic knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.

  • Previous customer service experience.
