Job description
Overview: The Technical Writer is responsible for writing, editing, reviewing and maintaining various documents and publications for the Program Office in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) standards. Primary Responsibilities: Creates/Designs/Maintains/Edits various publications, which may include but are not limited to technical documents, reports, student guides, instructor guides course material, and other reference materials, ensuring adherence to standards, formats, and content/structure integrity and usability;
Collaborates with instructional designers and subject matter experts and/or occasionally observes or participates in tests or demonstrations to acquire information and content for the production of original documentation;
Ensures that materials are consistent with Department of State (DoS) policies, Training and Performance standards, and established formats, as well as other information presented during training;
Consults on or selects illustrative materials for inclusion in various publications. These include, but are not limited to photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts;
Provides documentation and publications to meet the requests/needs of clients, subject matter experts, and/or management;
Performs initial reviews of publications/documentation and provide recommendations for revisions to scope, format, content, etc., as needed;
Performs final reviews of proposed publications for tone, design, layout, editorial, and production specification aspects before release;
Applies a consistent set of style, grammar, and punctuation practices to documents;
Maintains files and copies of work assignments and revisions according to recommendations and/or established best practices/standards;
Employee requires infrequent supervision and is expected to work independently according to established policies and accepted practice.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Education and/or Experience: A Bachelor's Degree in a related field, plus a minimum of six (6) years' experience in editing and publication completed at a Technical Writer II level or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must understand how to work within the parameters of an established organization aesthetic, as well as have an intermediate-level understanding of publication design concepts;
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Excellent command of the English language to include grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; and attention to detail. Must also possess the motivation to start and complete projects with minimal oversight;
Strong time management, project management, and multi-tasking skills;
Ability to acquire and present technical information through independent reading, interviews with subject-matter specialists, observation of tests and experiments, interpretation of diagrams, or other appropriate methods;
Able to tailor writing and publications for a specific type of audience;
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and Paint;
Proficiency in Publisher, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Windows Media Player, Snipping Tool (or other screen capture software), and Notepad;
Intermediate skills in Microsoft SharePoint preferred.

Possess or be able to obtain/maintain a SECRET security clearance
Physical Demands: The physical demands that will be required inside the work place and for the position. Must lift, will sit, answer the phone, type on a keyboard, move files, etc. Travel: None. Work Environment: Office environment.
