We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Sales and Use Tax Accountant to join our team. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with state tax laws, handling tax audits, and managing large data sets related to sales and use tax. You will also contribute to various tax processes, including property tax audits, payroll tax audits, and monthly reconciliations. Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary contact during sales and use tax audits. Gather necessary documentation, review audit schedules, and resolve discrepancies with auditors.
Respond to auditor inquiries and provide support for audit defense, including preparing audit-ready data sets.
Identify and address any discrepancies in sales tax exemptions, rates, or filings.
Assist with property tax audits and payroll tax audits, preparing necessary documentation and reconciling discrepancies.
Work with large data sets to reconcile tax GL accounts and sales tax payable accounts.
Align governmental data with internal historical data to ensure accuracy and timely reporting.
Review and verify exemption certificates and ensure proper documentation is maintained for tax-exempt sales.
Run through a monthly checklist of sales and use tax-related tasks to ensure deadlines and compliance are met.
Perform reconciliations of sales tax liabilities, identifying and resolving variances.
Prepare ad hoc reporting for internal and external stakeholders as needed, including tax projections and variance analyses.
Conduct research on sales and use tax regulations to provide guidance on new tax rules and emerging issues.
Analyze potential tax risks and opportunities, ensuring optimization of tax savings where applicable.
Qualifications:
1-3 years of experience in sales and use tax, with a focus on multi-state tax compliance.
Proven ability to handle sales and use tax audits, and manage large data sets with precision.
Strong knowledge of state tax laws and experience preparing multi-state sales and use tax returns.
Proficiency with tax software and systems, as well as Excel for data manipulation and reconciliation.
Experience working with tax exemption certificates and ensuring compliance with exemption rules.
Ability to reconcile complex tax accounts, identify discrepancies, and resolve issues.
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage large volumes of data efficiently.
Public accounting experience is a plus but not required.
Excellent communication skills to work with internal teams and external auditors.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with strict deadlines.
