Job Description:

The Genetic Counselor will play a crucial role in the Newborn Screening Program, focusing on long-term follow-up for babies diagnosed with specific conditions through newborn screening. This position involves a mix of clinical and administrative responsibilities, requiring strong communication and data management skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program.
  • Licensed as a genetic counselor in Tennessee (current and valid).
  • Board-certified or eligible.
  • Two years of experience working as a genetic counselor (preferred).
  • Proficiency in electronic data management and navigating complex databases.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience in time management, customer service, and teamwork.
  • Experience in public health and health data (preferred).
  • Knowledge of newborn screening disorders and treatments (preferred).

Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional direction related to genetic counseling, including leadership, planning, and coordination of service delivery for statewide public health programs.
  • Conduct genetic risk assessments, provide counseling, and offer information and support to individuals and families affected by or at risk for genetic disorders.
  • Act as a patient advocate, referring individuals and families to appropriate support services.
  • Serve as an educator and resource for trainees, healthcare professionals, and the public.
  • Develop and coordinate a new long-term follow-up program for providers and families of babies diagnosed through newborn screening.
  • Track outcomes of diagnosed babies over time.
  • Interact with various stakeholders, including primary care providers, specialists, families, and newborn screening staff.
  • Perform clinical work, administrative tasks, team collaboration, database utilization, and data interpretation.
  • Develop procedures and quality assurance reports for outcome tracking.
