Job description
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based treatment for children with autism and other developmental delays that uses a systemic approach to help your child learn and grow. "Evidence-based" means that there is enough research showing that it is an effective treatment for children with autism spectrum disorders. This means we know it works, and we know how! ABA principles can be applied to help children increase communication, improve social skills, and increase adaptive skills such as dressing, feeding, and reducing unwanted behaviors like aggression or tantrums.
An ABA intern's responsibilities focus around ABA group implementation, which includes: (indirect activities) data graphing and analysis, support with lesson planning and creation of materials for ABA groups; and (direct activities) collaboration with lead clinician, providing individualized support during group to increase participation, engaging children in play and group activities, implementing behavioral programming, collecting behavioral data, providing immediate reinforcement or interventions to de-escalate and prevent need for crisis response. ABA Group is only for children ages 3-5.
Some internship responsibilities include:
- Initiates and supports group activities, such as interactive and imaginative play, and peer interaction to enhance socialization skill sets.
- Collaborate with the lead clinician on session planning, activity ideas and creation of supporting materials for activities.
- Prompts safe and socially acceptable replacement behaviors to build a repertoire of communication, social interaction, and problem-solving skills.
- Fades prompts appropriately to promote independent use of replacement behaviors.
- Increases the frequency or duration of safe and appropriate replacement behaviors by providing access to reinforcement (desired items/actions, attention, or removal of demands/aversive situations)
- Accurately collects behavior data including: A-B-C, count, frequency, duration, latency, inter-response time, event, and interval based recording
- Follows the treatment plan goals and interventions utilizing the ABA programming and seeks out consultation when needed.
- Facilitates and supports discrete trial training to teach skill acquisition related to individualized goals.
- Graph and summarize individual and group data and monitor client's daily progress on goals and objectives in relation to the treatment plan.
