The Registered Nurse Hematology and Oncology delivers nursing care for patients across their life span, and through the nursing process, assesses, plans, implements, and documents the effects of care. Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. These nursing functions of the Registered Nurse are carried out according to the New Jersey/Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act (based on location), hospital policy, the hospital Mission Statement, and the Philosophy of the Department of Nursing.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works in conjunction with the Medical Oncologist to provide the highest level of care to the patients.
Acts as a scribe for chemotherapy orders and has proficient knowledge of chemotherapy protocols.
Communicates with infusion center as necessary per patient's treatment regimen.
Enters retrospective orders into EMR per protocol for medications, imaging and procedures.
Provides treatment education to patients and their families and answers questions regarding diagnosis and treatment.
Serves as a consistent contact for the patient/family throughout the process of diagnosis and treatment.
Assists in coordination of care to other providers within the network.
Maintains detailed knowledge of computer software systems as it relates to job functions.
Prioritize phone calls and coordinate care accordingly.
Responds to written and telephone inquiries from patients, insurance carriers and facilities regarding planned services.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Requires sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours at a time). Continually uses fingers for patient care, writing and viewing patient chart in Electronic Medical Record. Routinely uses upper extremities; occasionally lift items up to 25 pounds. Occasionally pushcart with supplies up to 30 pounds. Occasionally push wheelchair with patient weighing up to 325 pounds. Stoop, bend and reach above shoulder level regularly. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation and taking blood pressure readings. General vision, near vision and peripheral vision all required.
EDUCATION:
Current RN license in the State of New Jersey or Pennsylvania, based on work location.
Within 6 months of employment take the Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Course with successful completion of post-test.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Oncology experience required. Experience in ambulatory oncology nursing helpful.
Current CPR required.
Within 6 months of employment take the Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Course with successful completion of post-test.
Oncology Nurse certification preferred be obtained after the second year of employment.
