Patient Account Representative

As a Patient Account Representative, you will be responsible for managing and maintaining patient accounts, handling billing inquiries, processing insurance claims, and ensuring timely and accurate payment collections. Your role will be critical in supporting our mission to provide exceptional patient care while optimizing financial operations within the healthcare facility.

Duties of the Patient Account Representative


  • Generate and review patient invoices, statements, and bills.

  • Assist patients with billing inquiries, explaining charges, and providing payment options.

  • Handle disputes, discrepancies, and billing errors with sensitivity and professionalism.

  • Prepare and submit insurance claims to various carriers and government agencies.

  • Follow up on unpaid or rejected claims, resolving any issues promptly.

  • Coordinate payment arrangements and negotiate payment plans with patients when necessary.

  • Initiate and manage the collections process for overdue accounts in compliance with regulations.

  • Generate regular reports on accounts receivable, outstanding balances, and revenue trends.

  • Adhere to relevant healthcare laws, regulations, and billing guidelines (e.g., HIPAA).

  • Communicate effectively with patients, insurance companies, and internal stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with other departments such as billing, finance, and clinical staff to resolve complex billing issues.


Requirements of the Patient Account Representative


  • Proven experience as a Patient Account Representative or in a similar medical billing and collections role is advantageous.

  • Knowledge of medical billing software and electronic health records (EHR) systems.

  • Familiarity with insurance verification, claims processing, and reimbursement procedures.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare billing codes (e.g., CPT, ICD-10) and insurance plans.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a customer-centric approach.

  • Detail-oriented and capable of maintaining accurate records.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with integrity.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills for resolving billing discrepancies.

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other relevant software.


Compensation of the Patient Account Representative
$18-22/hr dependent on education and experience
