Job description

Title: Histology Job Summary:

  • Works under the Histotech Coordinator and the Pathologist.
  • Consults with and keeps Coordinator and Pathologist informed of activities, needs, and problems.
  • Complies with established standards and practices/procedures/policies.
  • Assemble supplies and equipment and keeps work area clean.
  • Prepares and keeps records and reports for the Pathology Department.
  • Files, mails, and calls reports.
  • Participates in all Pathology procedures.
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
  • Transcribes patient reports accurately with no errors.
  • Competently operates Tissue Processor, Embedder, and Microtome.
  • Completes all work during shift without sacrificing the quality of care.
  • Verifies the specimen or requisition and investigates discrepancies.
  • Documents preventive maintenance and quality control procedures performed, when appropriate.
  • Ensures that supplies are available and notifies appropriate personnel when low.
  • Demonstrates broad knowledge in the pathology department.
  • Embeds and cuts specimens properly.
  • Completes proper staining of frozen sections, as well as paraffin-fixed tissue, and can coverslip them properly.
  • Performs QC with all special stains.
  • Assists Physician/Pathologist with bone marrow aspirations.
  • Assists Pathologist in performing autopsies.
  • Maintains surgical and cytology files and logs.
  • Maintains a log for abnormal results for statistical purposes.
  • Operates, calibrates, and maintains all Histo/Cyto equipment and maintains all required records.
  • Prepares all reagents, solutions, and stains properly labels and stores them.
  • Utilizes protocols and procedures considered acceptable by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the American Society for Cytology.
Regulatory and Education Requirements:
  • Successful completion of an accredited Histotechnology program, or an Associate Degree, or 60 semester hours of college credit including 6 hours in Chemistry, 6 hours in Biology, and 1 year of acceptable experience under an ASCP Pathologist and HT (ASCP) or HLT (ASCP) preferred with a minimum of Registry eligible.
Experience:
  • Prefer at least 3 years of previous experience as a Histotechnician (ASCP) or Histotechnician eligible.
  • Previous work history that demonstrates attendance and punctuality are essential.
