Position Title: Firefighter

Toledo Fire and Rescue is currently hiring for the position of Firefighter. Candidates must complete the online application and entry-level exam through the National Testing Network (NTN) between August 22, 2024, and November 22, 2024. The Firefighter Mile (FFM) must be completed by January 17, 2025. The City of Toledo requires candidates to complete the FFM during this exam period.

Voucher Information:
Ohio residents and residents of select Michigan counties (Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Monroe, Washtenaw, and Wayne) may be eligible for a voucher to cover the cost of the entry-level exam. Vouchers are available to the first 300 applicants who provide proof of residency, such as a valid Ohio driver's license or identification card or a voter registration card. Additionally, those who pass the entry-level exam may be eligible for a voucher to cover one attempt at the Firefighter Mile (FFM). Vouchers for the FFM are limited to the first 150 eligible applicants. Only one voucher per candidate is available.

Department Information:
The mission of the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department (TFRD) is to protect the community from fire and other emergencies through education, fire prevention code enforcement, emergency disaster planning, and the response of highly trained personnel. TFRD prioritizes reducing fire risks, developing and retaining professional members, embracing diversity, and reinforcing a positive community perception.

City Information:
Toledo, located in northwest Ohio, offers attractions such as the Toledo Zoo, Toledo Museum of Art, Imagination Station, Toledo Mud Hens baseball, Toledo Walleye hockey, and proximity to Cedar Point Amusement Park and professional sports teams in Ann Arbor and Detroit.

Job Requirements:

Age: Must be at least 18 years old and under 40 at the final closing date for the Civil Service examination.
Citizenship: Must be eligible to work in the United States.
High School Grad/GED: Required.
Valid Ohio Driver's License: Required.
Vision: No color vision deficiency, peripheral vision must be 70 degrees or greater, no amblyopia, and specific corrective vision requirements.
Academy Certification:
All newly appointed Firefighters must comply with the apprenticeship programs as registered with the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, U.S. Department of Labor, and the standards established by the Toledo Fire Division for the Fire Training Academy and probationary period.

Necessary Certifications:
Newly appointed Firefighters are required to become paramedics. Paramedic coursework will be provided and must be completed on the Firefighter's own time. Paramedic certification must be maintained throughout the Firefighter's career.

Hiring Process:
Candidates must pass the Civil Service examination and qualify within the appointment range on the eligible list. The selection process includes:

Background Investigation: Conducted by the Toledo Police Department.
Oral Interview: For candidates who pass the background process.
Medical Examination: Required for candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment.
Veterans Preference:
Veterans may receive preference points added to their passing score on the competitive recruitment examination. A DD-214 must be provided at the time of application.

EMT/Paramedic Preference:
Preference points are awarded for having and maintaining active EMT or Paramedic certifications.

Physical Ability Examination:
Candidates must pass a physical ability test designed to assess fitness for the job-related tasks of a Firefighter.

Fire Training Academy:
All appointed Firefighters must meet the standards established by the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department Training Academy during the probationary period.
