Hydraulic & Punch Press Operator/Setup

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities:

Operates mechanical press equipment to shape materials used in manufacturing operations. Performs operations such as blanking, bending, punching, forming, etc., on a variety of materials, based on blueprints and other instructions.

Essential Functions:


  • Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information. Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs.
  • Plans machine setup by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters, interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances.
  • Press - Sets up and operates hydraulic or punch presses to trim, punch, shape, notch, draw, or crimp metal stock
  • Press - Assembles, installs, and aligns dies in press according to specifications, using feelers, shims, templates, bolts, clamps, and wrenches. Adjusts ram stroke to specified length.
  • Press - Positions work piece against fixtures or stops on machine bed or on die. Starts press and observes operation to detect misalignment or malfunction.
  • Sets up and operates machine to trim, bead, curl, or flange sheet metal cylinders or formed parts to blueprint specifications.
  • Sets appropriate pneumatic cylinders used to hold forming dies and cutters.
  • Bolts specified roller dies drives rolls onto spindles.
  • Positions spindles to align roller dies adjusts rolls to thickness of metal, using feelers, rule, shims, gauges and additionally hand tools.
  • Sets alignment guides.
  • Programs machine controls which stop machine or activates machine when specified length of strips has been run
  • Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces, adhering to blueprint or customer specifications.
  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter.
  • Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
  • Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and calling for repairs.
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:


  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Vocational School or equivalent experience (2 to 3 years) preferred

Training, Skills, Knowledge and/or Experience:


  • Five years plus press experience
  • Intermediate math skills- algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Advanced measurement skills.
  • Read, interpret technical drawings and standards.
  • Interpret, and document QC standards, and applications required as a part of the operation.
  • Knowledge and application of fixtures.
  • Knowledge of production processes, and material.
  • Strong mechanical abilities and craftsmanship.
  • Strong communication abilities.
  • Critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to monitor multiple machines at same time.
  • Ability to produce parts within tolerances.
  • Ability to measure, cut, or work on items with great accuracy.
  • Lock out tag out.
  • Forklift certified preferred
