Civil Service Examination and Selection Process
The City of Piqua is an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) employer.

Examination Test:
The exam is offered through the National Testing Network (NTN). Registration is required before reporting to the testing facility. The closest testing location to Piqua is at Edison Community College, located at 1973 Edison Drive, Room 115, Piqua, Ohio.

Written Test:

Not applicable for Lateral Entry applicants.
The exam will last approximately two to two and a half hours. Identification with a state-issued drivers license or military ID is required.
Cellular phones, recording devices, and any other aids are prohibited.
A minimum score of 70% is required to pass. Those who do not pass will be notified.
Examination Fee:
The fee for the examination is paid directly to NTN at the time of registration. If results are to be sent to multiple cities or agencies, additional fees apply.

The application process includes the following steps:

Meet Minimum Requirements: Listed in the application packet.

Complete the Application: Available on the Citys website. Submit the following documents:

Birth certificate
Education records (High School Diploma, GED, or college degree if applicable)
"Job Functions Accommodation" form
Documentation of military service, if applicable
EMT or Paramedic Certification
Level I or Level II Fire Certification (if applicable)
Current CPAT or Firefighter Mile certification, if available
Eligibility List: Compiled based on test results for eligible applicants (not applicable for lateral transfers).

Interviews and Testing: Candidates may undergo an oral interview, background investigation, truth verification examination, and drug screening.

Conditional Employment: Candidates will complete psychological and medical evaluations.

Eligibility List Duration: The list remains valid for twelve months.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Age: Applicants may take the test six months before their 18th birthday; must be at least 18 at the time of appointment.
Maximum Age: No person over 35 at the time of appointment (except for lateral entry).
Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience: EMT-B, EMT-A, or Paramedic Certification at time of hire.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
Drivers License: A valid Ohio drivers license with an acceptable record is required. DUI convictions may disqualify an applicant.
Physical Condition: Must pass the CPAT or Firefighter Mile test. The City of Piqua also offers a job-based physical agility test.
Criminal Record Disqualifications
DUI conviction within the last five years
Second DUI conviction
Felony convictions (including felony-misdemeanor offenses)
Lying, falsification, or theft while employed as a firefighter
Family violence offenses
Crimes against children
Work-related actions resulting in civil lawsuits
Additional Testing Requirements
Truth Verification Examination: Administered during the background investigation and post-offer.
Psychological Testing: Conducted after a conditional offer.
Physical Fitness Testing: CPAT or Firefighter Mile certification is required or must pass the citys agility test at hire.
Lateral Entry Requirements
Lateral entry applicants must be Firefighter Level II with a Paramedic Certification and at least one year of full-time experience, having completed any probation period. Lateral candidates may receive a higher starting salary to match current wages.

Additional Credits for Entry-Level Examinations
Applicants may receive additional points for a passing (70% or above) score based on the following:

Military Service Credits: Ten percent (10%) of the passing test score for those with at least 12 continuous months or 18 cumulative months of active military duty. Proper documentation (e.g., DD214) is required.
Candidates must submit notarized or certified copies of appropriate records for additional credits. Candidates who do not meet the deadline will not receive additional credits.
