Job description
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) works under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist (PT) to provide rehabilitation services to patients or residents in a healthcare, long-term care, or assisted living facility. The PTA assists in implementing treatment plans designed to improve patients physical mobility, strength, and overall functional abilities. This role involves working closely with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary care team to support the achievement of the patients therapy goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with Treatment Plans:
Follow the physical therapist's established treatment plans to carry out rehabilitation exercises and therapeutic interventions aimed at improving strength, mobility, and function.
Assist patients with exercises, stretching, and the use of therapeutic equipment as prescribed by the physical therapist.
Provide guidance to patients on how to perform exercises safely and effectively during therapy sessions and at home.
Monitor Patient Progress:
Observe and monitor patients during therapy sessions to evaluate their performance and response to treatment.
Report any changes in patient condition or progress to the supervising physical therapist.
Modify treatment approaches as directed by the physical therapist to maximize patient outcomes.
Documentation and Reporting:
Accurately document patients' progress, treatment sessions, and outcomes in accordance with facility policies and regulatory guidelines.
Maintain detailed notes on patient care activities, including any concerns, challenges, or improvements observed during therapy.
Communicate with the interdisciplinary team to provide updates on patient progress and collaborate on care plans.
Patient and Family Education:
Educate patients and their families on how to perform exercises at home to promote continued progress and recovery.
Provide instruction on the safe use of assistive devices, such as walkers, canes, or wheelchairs.
Support patients and their families by addressing any questions or concerns related to their therapy and recovery process.
Safety and Compliance:
Ensure patient safety by following all facility protocols and safety guidelines during therapy sessions.
Assist with patient transfers, mobility, and positioning to prevent injuries and ensure patient comfort.
Follow all regulations and guidelines related to patient care, including those set forth by state and federal laws.
Collaboration and Teamwork:
Work closely with the physical therapist, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care.
Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and care conferences to discuss patient progress and collaborate on treatment plans.
Assist with setting up and maintaining therapy equipment and ensuring a clean and organized treatment area.
Education: Associates degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.
Licensure: Current and active Physical Therapist Assistant license.
Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare, long-term care, or rehabilitation setting is preferred but not required. New graduates are welcome to apply.
Skills:
Strong understanding of physical therapy principles, techniques, and equipment.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and patient-focused approach to care.
Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team and follow the direction of a supervising physical therapist.
Proficiency in documenting patient care activities in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
