Patrol Officer Job Description City of Yazoo City

DEFINITION:

To protect the lives and property of the citizens of Yazoo City by pursuing and apprehending individuals who break the law and then issue citations or give warnings. Report writing of incidents encountered by patrolling certain jurisdictions and investigating suspicious activity observed. Respond to dispatch calls from individuals.

SUPERVISON RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Directly reports to the Sergeant, Captain(s) and Chief of Police of the Yazoo City Police Department.
  • Receives general supervision and administrative direction from the Captain and Chief of Police.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Maintain regular patrols and responds to calls for service
  2. Directing traffic at various scene incidents
  3. Remain alert for any unusual, circumstances and or hazardous situations
  4. Confrontations with criminals requiring being alert and obvious dangers
  5. Ready to deal appropriately with other threatening situations
  6. Face to face or witness death and suffering resulting from accidents and criminal behavior
  7. Shift work and accountability on or off shift schedule
  8. Writing citations.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Extensive knowledge of the overall operations of the City of Yazoo including policies, procedures, and ordinances
  • General law enforcement rules regulations and procedures
  • Completion of State of Mississippi Certified Law Enforcement designation

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to maintain order and provide security in the City of Yazoo City
  • Ability to remain constantly alert and ready to deal appropriately with a number of threatening situations
  • Ability to produce written reports and provide administrative support to the Sergeant and Captain
  • Ability to use and properly care for firearm and other equipment
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements
  • Ability to work in hazardous conditions or in life threatening situations
  • Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others

EXPERIENCE & GUIDELINES:

  • High School diploma/GED with a minimum of one year experience as Police Officer Trainee
  • Good physical ability and strength to walk, run, climb, crawl, or sit for extended periods as required by situation
  • Good hearing and visual acuity necessary for observation and monitoring of assigned beat and or shift.
  • Valid driver's license
