Department Summary: The Principal Automotive Safety Innovation professional will be part of the surface transportation safety team applying his or her expertise to multiple automotive, roadway, and autonomy safety research studies conducted in collaboration with government and industry partners. This person will be responsible for shaping research as well as leading major surface transportation initiatives that aim to accelerate the safe adoption of transportation technology to make our nation's roads safer. Studies include analyzing the performance of automated driving systems and advanced driver assistance safety features, including the emerging opportunities and gaps in performance; analyzing human interactions and behavior associated with advanced automotive technologies; and formulating a policy framework to safely advance vehicle automation. Roles & Responsibilities: Engage with government sponsors and automotive partners to understand and shape desired safety outcomes and associated research activities.
Shape long-term, strategic view of MITRE's automotive safety research activities; to include coordinating strategic and tactical planning efforts with MITRE's PARTS Project and Technical Leads, consistently scanning the horizon for new opportunities, periodically refreshing the strategy and plans, and exploring improvements in program operations.
Build partnerships with safety personnel representing automobile manufacturers, suppliers, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation officials, state and local transportation planners, labor representatives, and other automotive stakeholders to develop collaborative safety solutions for adoption in the automobile industry.
Provide thought leadership as input to a comprehensive policy framework or other products that aim to guide USDOT and other relevant stakeholders in ensuring the safe development and operation of automated vehicles. Coordinate outputs with government and industry stakeholders.
Represent MITRE on select committees/boards/working groups.
Manage messaging to the external stakeholder community in coordination with government and industry partners and MITRE Strategic Communications. Basic Qualifications: Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 10 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Automotive industry experience with knowledge of advanced technologies including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), automated driving systems (ADS), and Connected Vehicles (CV).
Familiarity with automotive safety policy and policy-making processes.
Experience with vehicle autonomy and its challenges.
Skills in safety management, spanning functional, organizational, and system views.
Existing connections and relationships with the automotive and roadway safety practitioners, federal regulators, state and local government representatives, researchers, and other stakeholders.
Able to operate effectively in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
Work collaboratively and effectively in a cross-organizational (e.g., matrixed) environment.
Work independently on multiple projects simultaneously.
Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to convey complex concepts in a clear, compelling, and organized manner to a variety of audiences.
Applies both complex thinking skills and an innovative mindset to the work at hand
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site Preferred Qualifications: 10+ years experience applying safety management, solution development, alternatives analysis, requirements development, and/or data management and analytics to automotive and roadway operations.
Understands the components of the automotive and roadway system, the interfaces among those components, and the processes or rules that govern how the components and interfaces change over time. This includes the vehicle capabilities, roadway design, transportation laws, roadside infrastructure, ongoing infrastructure investments, safety, security, and spectrum management.
Familiarity with the key priorities facing the automotive industry, including improving safety and reducing harm, supply chain resiliency, shift to new energy sources, equity for both drivers and the non-driving public, mobility, and more.
Creative problem solver with the ability to think holistically about challenges and potential solutions.
