Job description
1. Organizes, directs and supervises functions and activities of the laboratory's second shift personnel; Specimen Processing, Clinical Lab and Phlebotomy areas. 2. Creates and maintains employee work schedules in accordance with contract language. 3. Evaluates work performance; complete annual Employee Performance Evaluations in a timely manner. 4. Trains/orients staff in all areas of pre and post-analytical processes, procedures and related computer functions. Assists section supervisors in the training of technical staff for second and third shifts. 5. Maintains technical competencies as a Laboratory generalist, able to assist staff as needed. 6. Conducts monthly sectional meetings and submits minutes to the Laboratory Manager. 7. Reviews reports with appropriate follow-up and documentation and maintains as required. 8. Participates in development and implementation of policies, procedures and standards. 9. Requests and orders supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times. 10. Responsible for the design, implementation and management of quality assurance projects, as well the evaluation of data and providing recommendations. 11. Maintains assigned Procedure Manuals in compliance with CAP and NCCLS standards and review/revises the manuals as necessary and at least annually. 12. Participates in budget preparation and strives to operate section within allocated budget. a. Makes recommendations for modification or changes for the maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness. b. Keeps current with equipment and supplies by vendor contracts to evaluate new products and equipment. c. Submits monthly variance reports on time. 13. Interviews applicants and make recommendations for hiring. 14. Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential. 15. Develops and maintains effective communication with assigned staff, co-workers, physicians, other Hospital personnel, outside organizations or others who provide or receive Laboratory services. 16. Maintains professional growth and development through approved seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 17. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans. 18. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the union contract. 19. Maintains close working relationships with other section supervisors, reference laboratories, and other internal and external organizations as required. 20. Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Bachelor's Degree, MT (ASCP) or equivalent or AS degree with a minimum of 5 years hospital laboratory experience. Prior laboratory supervisory experience preferred. Outstanding communication skills, excellent leadership ability, solid understanding of laboratory compliance issues and ability to use standard word processing and spreadsheet software. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondences and procedure manuals Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
