POSITION: Surgical Technologist
LOCATION: Medford, MA
HOURS: Full-time, Part-time or Per Diem
Hours of operation: Monday - Friday 7:00am-3:30pm (no nights, no call, no weekends!)
Signing Bonus: $10,000 for 30+ Hours $5,000 for 10+ Hours
OVERVIEW:
The Surgical Technician prepares the operating room by sterilizing and setting up the necessary equipment for the procedure. Responsible for assembling all equipment and ensuring it functions properly. The Surgical Technician handles instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. The Surgical Technician has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. The Surgical Technician has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is vigilant in the maintenance of the sterile field. He/she will perform other related duties as needed to maintain department cost containment, efficiency, as well as quality performance.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Actively works to promote and maintain an organizational culture that enhances our standing as the best place to work and receive care.
• Active engagement in staff meetings, department meetings, in-services, educational requirements, etc.
• Selects and checks case carts and preference cards for correct instrument pan(s), packs, sterile supplies, and additional items needed for the case to facilitate timely procedure start times, efficient and timely procedure progress, and complete case set ups.
• Anticipates the need for special equipment and supplies before the procedure and requests it from the circulating nurse.
• Checks that instruments and equipment are in safe working order.
• Displays knowledge of the care and handling of instruments, supplies, and equipment.
• Prepares and maintains a safe patient care environment within the OR suite.
• Maintains the integrity of all sterile goods by close observation of sterile conscience, monitoring of packaging and handling.
• Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure, while preparing for additional instrumentation, equipment, and supply needs throughout the procedure.
• Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
• Handles medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions as dispensed to the sterile field by a Registered Nurse for surgeon use.
• Demonstrates knowledge of The Surgery Center's current policies and procedures.
• Performs initial and closing counts on instruments, sharps, and sponges. Per The Surgery Center's policy and procedure, performs additional counts as needed.
• Prepares and hands off specimens carefully to the circulating nurse, without compromising staff safety or labeling accuracy.
• Identifies, selects, and performs correct decontamination, cleaning, and sterilization method for equipment and instrumentation for various surgical procedures. At the end of cases, cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
• Assists with stripping, cleaning, and setting up the OR suite for own/other's cases with efficiency and speed.
• Assists with OR flow as required.
• Assists in the maintenance of equipment and instrumentation to facilitate durability and availability for future procedures.
• Contributes to meeting the fluctuating staffing needs of the department as evidenced by flexibility in own assignment and work schedule.
• Demonstrates initiative and collaborates professionally with caregivers in/out of the OR suite.
• Promotes teamwork by assisting with the precepting of new caregivers.
• Identifies areas of conflict, intervenes effectively, or seeks assistance in conflict resolution.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Education Qualifications:
• Completion of an accredited surgical technician program or equivalent from an accredited school is required.
• Certification (CST) required within 1 year of program completion.
• Mass experience prior to July 2013.
EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum of one (1) year work experience as a surgical technician is required.
• Experience in Ambulatory Surgery or Outpatient Surgery preferred.
• Experience scrubbing in on variety of cases (orthopedic, plastics, general, and urology) preferred.
• Experience in Sterile Processing Department is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS:
• Currently holds American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) or AHA approved equivalent (or obtains within three (3) months of hire).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Lift 10 lbs. box overhead. Lift and carry 15 lbs. Push/pull 20 lbs. cart.
• Lift and carry 25-35 lbs. Push/pull 50-100 lbs. (ie. empty bed, stretcher)
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Push/pull +/- 150-200 lbs. (Patients on bed, stretcher) Lateral transfer 150-200 lbs. (ie. Patient)
• Lift over 50 lbs. Carry 80 lbs. a distance of 30 feet. Push/pull > 200 lbs. (ie. Patients on bed, stretcher)
