General Summary: Responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating the staff development and educational activities for assigned area(s). Assures the quality of patient care delivered on assigned unit(s) through the assessment and development of the nursing staff. Participates in the development and implementation of educational programs for the entire Nursing Department. Position Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in nursing or related healthcare field required. Must have at least 3 years of clinical nursing experience with 1 year experience in clinical preceptor and/or charge nurse role; experience in teaching highly desired. Preferred candidates will also have recent Critical Care RN experience. Currently holds an active RN license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation computer software required. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Process improvement experience preferred. Position requires frequent use of the computer, keyboard and printer; educational equipment such as teaching manikins, simulators, LCD projectors, etc.; and reading of printed materials. Emergency room experience preferred, nursing education preferred. Major Responsibilities: Creates atmosphere conducive for learners to learn and to practice in accordance with Standards of Nursing Practice. Collaborates with Nurse Manager, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nursing Education Specialist, and others in defining nursing standards, practices, and educational needs of patient and nursing staff. Conducts an educational needs assessment for area(s) of responsibility on a regular basis. Implements and evaluates orientation, in-service, and continuing education programs for staff in assigned areas. Develops competency level of nursing staff with patients and patient populations managed on assigned unit(s). Implements curricula, instructional strategies, tests, and evaluation tools, and maintains current educational supplies and equipment. Recommends changes to the curricula based on feedback and current clinical and/or educational evidence. Applies evidence-based educational methods and technologies that support development of nursing expertise. Assures that staff meets required competencies, both annual and unit based, for area of practice. Oversees orientation to the charge nurse and preceptor roles for nurses new to those functions. Serve as a facilitator for nursing governance councils as requested. Coordinates student clinical experiences with faculty from schools of nursing and other disciplines that utilize our clinical site for education. Serves as faculty for Department of Nursing programs. Participates in educational strategic planning efforts for the Department of Nursing. Establishes and maintains effective communication within areas of responsibility and with other departments. Maintains required data, records, and statistics for administrative, regulatory, and evaluation purposes for educational programs delivered. Keeps current on best practice standards of nursing practice and education. Identifies policies, standards, and practices not in compliance with current standards and recommends revisions needed through the nursing leadership and governance structures. Participates with Nurse Manager in coordination of quality improvement program for the unit and participates in related evaluation of the outcomes of quality monitoring. Assists nurse managers and other nursing staff with projects and activities to support the nursing area(s) of responsibility. Promotes a culture of safety within the organization. Follows or recommends revisions of established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars as required. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
