Job Description Summary: The Group leader for Instrumentation Electronics is the technical leader of a diverse team of instrumentation electronics engineers, mixed-signal controls specialists, and support staff. This team has expertise in precision electronics development for complex MEMS, electro-optical, and electro-mechanical inertial instruments, and other similarly sensitive sensor modalities. The Group Leader is the first level of engineering management. This position requires the ability to apply sound scientific and management principles for hands-on technical leadership. Managerial responsibilities of the Group Leader include: • Oversight of the technical quality and timeliness of project execution within the group • Fostering innovation through the active pursuit of high risk & high payback opportunities from both internal and external sponsors • Recruitment and hiring of highly skilled and innovative technical staff and support personnel • Guiding the career development and training of staff, including preparing and delivering performance reviews of all direct reports • Development and execution of a long-term technical capability growth plan for the group's facilities and staff to meet future business needs The candidate will be a direct contributor to projects and business development activities. In this capacity, the selected candidate will collaborate with other staff members to develop and transition innovative technologies. Required Qualifications: Demonstrated leadership experience in the design and development of precision mixed signal control circuitry and systems, preferably in the military electronics/avionics industry. A deep understanding of the following areas is required: low-noise amplification including charge amplifiers, analog-digital conversion including sigma-delta modulators, methods of synchronous detection, analog and digital signal processing, oscillators and phase-locked loops, synchronous motors and motor drive circuits, and servo control systems generally. It is also highly desirable that the candidate possess an understanding of and experience with inertial instruments, particularly MEMS-based, electro-mechanical and fiber-optic gyroscopes and accelerometers. An understanding of radiation-hardening techniques for electronics is a plus. The candidate should be proficient using SPICE-base circuit simulators as well as MATLAB/Simulink, in addition to having strong analytical skills and a solid knowledge of applied physics and communication theory. The ideal candidate will have shown consistent growth in his or her career through steadily increasing responsibility, be a self-starter with excellent oral and written communication skills, be capable of achieving organizational and program objectives, and be able to interface with all levels of internal management, as well as program sponsors and sub-contractors. • Manage administrative details and career development for group members.
• Convey relevant information from management to group members.
• Lead, mentor, build depth in their area of expertise, and conduct performance evaluations of group members.
• Maintain awareness of staffing requirements, write job requisitions (responsibilities and qualifications) for hiring as required, review and disposition incoming resumes, conduct interviews.
• Serve as Lead Subject Matter Expert for area of specialty.
• Shape Draper's technology offerings and open new business areas based on program and technical experience.
• Analyze Draper strategy and work with management to build capability in key areas that align Draper's capabilities with customers' strategic priorities. Skills/Abilities
