Job description

Academic Advisor
The Opportunity

Lesley University is seeking an Academic Advisor for our Low Residency Expressive Therapy programs. This position plays a crucial role in fostering success and ensuring that students have a rewarding educational experience. The Academic Advisor supports students with their academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and career goals.

They will advise students individually, or in groups, regarding department requirements, appropriate class selection, policies, and campus resources, to ensure students meet the requirements for graduation. In this capacity, the Academic Advisor assists in helping students have better academic performance, increased retention rates, and a more fulfilling university experience.

The Academic Advisor will likewise assist with degree audits, maintain advising records and confidential student evaluations in Colleague, and advise special student populations such as transfer students, undeclared majors, first generation, and students on probation. This position requires considerable contact with students and therefore requires demonstrated skills and abilities in cultural competency, equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice.

Qualities and Capabilities

A successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelors degree (required). Masters degree in Education, Counseling, or related field (preferred).
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in advising, or related student-facing academic functions within higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret student needs and provide individualized service and assistance while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to cultivate and sustain relationships with diverse audiences.
