Job description
The Alaka ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a Transportation/Logistical Support and Animal Caretaker to support our government customer located in Frederick, Maryland . DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties involve transport of shipments of items on a daily basis, within and outside USAMRIID. Driver duties shall entail operation of Government furnished vehicles, carts, and handcarts for movement of equipment, supplies, and animals between USAMRIID buildings, including the warehouses. Transport shall include live animals, lab specimens, food supplies, equipment, cages and miscellaneous data, reports and materials. Transport shall be by Government-furnished vehicle external to other Government agencies and/or DoD facilities or between USAMRIID facilities, or by transport cart within or between the buildings. When not providing transportation support, will provide animal husbandry support (non-containment). Provide necessary logistical support for USAMRIID animal facilities. Conduct all activities associated with moving animals, supplies and equipment between USAMRIID operational sites, and USAMRIID and other external entities, or between other locations, as required. Driver may be required to cross state lines in conduct of duties. Driver shall ensure compliance with Animal Welfare Regulations during transport. Assist in transport container preparation for animal movement, ensure full preparation of vehicles for animal or equipment transport, loading and unloading of animal crates, cages, or other transport containers, loading and unloading of equipment and supplies. During times when not actively driving, individual(s) shall conduct other duties required for logistical support for VMD. These duties may include, but are not limited to, taking inventory of equipment or materials stocked by the contract or government, replenishment of stockage of basic expendable supplies such as PPE or similar supplies, moving equipment requiring calibration to and from medical maintenance support locations, and transporting materials between building via cart or other conveyance. Driver(s) and personnel assisting with loading/unloading shall exercise care at all times to avoid damage to vehicles and items being transported. Ensure required preventive maintenance check is completed for all Government vehicles each day and each time used. Driver(s) will provide monthly dispatch information as requested. This includes, but is not limited to, tags numbers, mileage, and completed dispatch sheets. Information will be provided in the requested format meeting the requested suspense. When not performing transportation/logistical services, provide husbandry support to include: Provide animal care and husbandry including environmental enrichment, monitor animals twice daily, and have water available at all times. Assist with the receipt, examination, verification, and housing of all incoming laboratory animals. House animals in appropriate size and types of cages. Ensure adequate provision of feed and water for all animals. Replace bedding, change cages, and maintain areas in a clean and orderly condition. Ensure animals are properly identified. Transfer animals from cages to equipment for the purpose of transport, temporary containment or manipulation. Ensure room designations and quarantine procedures for incoming animals shall be strictly adhered to in accordance with the SOPs. Clean and decontaminate the area upon completion. Competently restrain species with which they are working with. Document specific observations or findings on appropriate forms. Assist with Cagewash to include changing of bedding, washing and sanitizing cages; and autoclaving equipment, feed, bedding, water and other materials and supplies. Maintain a same-day cage washing service. Maintain records of the temperatures for each assigned autoclave load, using the summary read-out heat tapes for all autoclave equipment cycles. Other duties as assigned. REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: H.S. Diploma A valid state license for the category of vehicle being operated (to include, when necessary, a Commercial Driver's License - CDL) and has NOT had his/her driver's license suspended for any reason within the past 10 years. Forklift certified or willing to obtain certification Individual must be in possession of licenses allowing operation of all VMD-owned general transport vehicles, and capable of driving all other smaller general transport vehicles and carts as required. REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: ALAT certification prior to work or within twelve (12) months of being at USAMRIID if contractor has previous laboratory animal experience or 18 months of being at USAMRIID if the contractor has no laboratory animal experience. Experience driving box trucks or larger. Experience with Microsoft word, excel and outlook DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Critical attention to detail Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) experience Prior lab animal experience working with nonhuman primates (NHP) Experience maintaining inventory REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE: Must be a U.S. Citizen Must have the ability to obtain a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).
