The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) mission is to support the NCI at Frederick in their mission to cure cancer and AIDS. FME is responsible for the physical campus - its research laboratory space, administrative space, the infrastructure that supports the buildings, and the landscape that surrounds them. In addition, we are responsible for managing, planning, designing, and construction management of renovations at the FNLCR.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible for the repair, fabrication, modification, maintenance, installation and testing of a full range of electronic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical instruments used in research and industry. Responsible for servicing such items as CO2 Incubators, oscilloscopes, radioactivity scales, spectrophotometers, electronic detectors, freezers, refrigerators, centrifuges, autoclaves, water purification systems, and projection equipment. Monitor and maintain scientific equipment alarms, differential pressures, O2 and CO2 building alarms, and the cardkey system for the facility. Work with other craft shops to complete troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repairs. Works independently and is subject to 24-hour call for emergency repairs. Assignments are reviewed for workmanship and adherence to standards.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Checks schematic diagrams and equipment manuals to isolate causes of instrument malfunctions
• Checks electronic alignment of instruments according to calibrating standards using electronic testing equipment
• Disassembles and replaces components such as vacuum tubes, thermocouples, transistors, etc.
• Redesigns existing circuits to meet special requirements
• Modifies equipment for miniaturization and efficiency of operation
• Periodically inspects instruments and support systems
• Conducts standard tests on newly installed support systems
• Assists in maintaining reserve essential components
• Occasionally working beyond normal duty hours, including weekends and holidays
• Contributes to the overall success of Operation and Maintenance Department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned
• Performs troubleshooting on low voltage controls

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

• Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent
• In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years of craft-related experience
  • Including one (1) year of vocational or manufacturers' instruction in electronic industrial instrumentation and pneumatic controls
• Ability to routinely lift and carry up to 40-50 lbs.; climb stairs and ladders; work involves bending, stooping and working in confined areas; potential exposure to particulates, vapors or noisy environment
• Ability to read prints, diagrams, schematics, programs, and operating instructions
• This position is considered a safety-sensitive position and will be subject to random drug testing per the Leidos Biomedical Research Drug Free Workplace Program.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

• Experience in a wide range installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial electrical equipment and systems
• Knowledge of electrical components of scientific/laboratory equipment
• Knowledge of National Electrical Codes, National Electrical Safety Codes; basic principles and theories of electricity; safety practices in the electrical trade
• Experience with voltmeters, ammeters, wattmeters, and other multi-amp testing equipment
• Experience replacing bearings, brushes, rings, contacts, and armatures of electric motors in scientific equipment
• Experience in CMMS BM RAM
• Experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
• Experience with REES Scientific alarm systems
• Experience working in a GMP facility
• Experience with PLC (Allen Bradley) and/or computer-controlled production equipment is advantageous
