Job description

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced System Administrator to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimizing our organization's IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, storage systems, and hyperconverged environments. This role requires advanced technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to troubleshoot across multiple domains (network, compute, and storage). Experience with VMware, vSAN, Nutanix, or Cisco HyperFlex environments is highly desirable. This position requires onsite work in College Park, MD and up to 50% travel to King George, VA. Key Responsibilities: System Administration: Install, configure, and maintain servers (Windows, Linux, etc.), storage systems, and other IT infrastructure components.
VMware Configuration and Management: Design, deploy, and maintain virtual environments using VMware products (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter) to optimize performance, scalability, and reliability.
Troubleshooting Across Domains: Diagnose and resolve issues across network (switches, routers), compute (servers), and storage (SAN, NAS) layers to ensure system availability and performance.
Hyperconverged Infrastructure: Manage and optimize hyperconverged environments, including VMware vSAN, Nutanix, or Cisco HyperFlex, to support scalable and high-performance computing needs.
Network Management: Monitor and maintain network performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure the security and integrity of the organization's networks.
Security: Implement and manage security measures, including firewalls, antivirus, intrusion detection, and vulnerability management, to safeguard company data and systems.
Backup and Recovery: Develop, maintain, and test backup and disaster recovery plans to ensure data integrity and availability.
Monitoring and Performance Optimization: Monitor system and virtual environment performance, identify potential issues, and take proactive steps to optimize reliability, efficiency, and performance.
Automation and Scripting: Develop scripts and tools to automate routine tasks, improve system efficiency, and reduce manual effort.
Compliance and Documentation: Ensure systems, including virtual environments, comply with industry standards and regulations, and maintain accurate documentation of configurations, procedures, and policies.
Mentorship and Training: Provide guidance and training to junior team members, and assist in developing best practices and standard operating procedures.
Vendor Management: Coordinate with vendors and service providers to support hardware and software procurement, maintenance, and issue resolution.
Project Management: Lead and participate in IT projects, including system upgrades, VMware migrations, and new implementations, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget. Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Relevant certifications (Red Hat Certified Engineer, CompTIA Network+, etc.) are highly desirable.
Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a system administration role, with experience in managing complex IT environments.
Clearance Required: Active Secret Technical Skills: Experience building and deploying Datacenter Racks from the ground up.
Proficiency in configuring and troubleshooting network switches, routers, and related network devices.
Strong experience configuring and managing hypervisors (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V, KVM).
Proven experience setting up and troubleshooting Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network-Attached Storage (NAS), or NFS servers.
Expertise in managing and optimizing hyperconverged infrastructure environments such as VMware vSAN, Nutanix, or Cisco HyperFlex.
Experience with VMware environments, including ESXi hosts, vSphere, and vCenter.
Experience configuring and managing Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and Active Directory.
Proficient in scripting and automation using PowerShell.
Experience deploying and configuring Linux Virtual Machines (VMs).
Familiarity with Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) for data center management.
Strong understanding of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and VPN.
Knowledge of backup and recovery tools and strategies. Soft Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a senior or lead role within an IT department.
Experience with ITIL or similar IT service management frameworks.
Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
