SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVE:

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a key member of the nursing team and is responsible for maintaining the activities and functions of resident care and nursing services. The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing quality care and quality services to the residents of the facility through solid clinical skills and the use of other caregivers and support staff. The RN will review staffing to determine that sufficient caregiving staff with the appropriate competencies and skills are available to provide resident safety and attain or maintain the highest practicable physical, mental and psychosocial well-being of each resident, as determined by resident assessments and individual plans of care and considering the number, acuity and diagnoses of the resident. The RN follows clinical systems, infection control, quality assurance, policies and procedures to assure that residents receive care that is consistent and reliable. The Registered Nurse monitors, manages, and directs the clinical standards for each resident to maximize each individuals quality of care and quality of life while honoring resident choice.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Licensed as a registered nurse in the state of Kentucky.
Minimum work experience of two years.
Experience in long term care, gerontology, and/or rehabilitation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Able to handle equipment, supplies and materials related to job responsibilities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Comply with the employees Code of Ethics.
Comply with the facility Compliance and Ethics.
Provide nursing care to patients within the scope of practice for an RN.
Provide care and services to each resident to assure that the resident receives care and services according to facility policies and regulatory standards.
Assure that nursing supplies and equipment are available for the delivery of care and services.
Assure that sufficient and qualified staff are available to provide care according to nursing schedules.
Assign nursing assistants to appropriate work areas while on duty.
Document the nursing care that the resident receives while on duty.
Review nursing documentation for accuracy and completeness.
Review the documentation of nursing assistants under immediate purview for accuracy and completeness.
Assure that all work areas are maintained in a clean, orderly, and professional manner and according to facility and regulatory requirements.
Assure compliance with policies related to medication storage, handling, and administration.
Review 24 Hour Change of Condition Reports daily and as needed.
Conduct resident care rounds.
Assist in employee and resident investigations.
Complete incident reports and root cause analysis.
Provide clinical expertise in the management of medical and psychiatric emergencies.
Evaluate and assesses resident clinical conditions.
Participate in the delivery and monitoring of resident meals.
Track and trend data, as requested.
Communicate with residents physician, family, legal representative and responsible party.
Assign responsibilities for Licensed Nurse and Nursing Assistant staff to meet resident needs.
Review nursing assistant assignment sheets and nursing assistant care plans for accuracy.
Participate in the Facility Disaster Plan and Emergency Preparedness Plan, as requested.
Work with other facility disciplines for the integration and coordination of resident care and services.
Communicate all issues, concerns, and updates to Supervisor or Director of Nursing.
Knowledgeable of federal, state and local regulations.
Participate in the correction of survey deficiencies, as requested.
Complete word processing and electronic resident care programs according to facility requirements, job functions and responsibilities.
Adhere to all policies and procedures as established by the facility and assist in facilitating established policies and procedures.
Participate in the facility-wide assessment to determine what resources are necessary to care for residents during both day-to-day operations and emergencies.
Participate in the performance of meeting state and national standards.
Participate in providing and promoting resident safety, quality of care, resident rights, resident choice, and respect of each resident.
Assure that confidentiality of medical records and resident care are maintained.
Knowledgeable of the Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program and work with QAPI activities to improve quality issues.
Partner with other departments and physicians on activities that contribute to the enhancement of care and services.
Knowledgeable of the facility infection prevention and control policies.
Monitor facility infection and control policies.
Report safety concerns or abuse concerns to the Administrator and Social Worker immediately.
Maintain current knowledge of nursing standards and practice.
Report any patient care, documentation or survey concerns to the Director of Nursing immediately.
Maintain compliance with the Abuse Prohibition program including the reporting of any allegation of resident abuse.
Adhere to employment policies and report breaches of employment policies.
Obtain continued education and certifications to assist in the essential functions and responsibilities of the job.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervise employees that are assigned to the nursing unit.
May be required to supervise other employees under the completion of essential functions and responsibilities of this position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT RISKS:

Subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, visitors, etc.
Subject to hot and cold temperatures.
Subject to loud noises and bright environment.
May work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays.
May be exposed to the effects of odors, dust, disinfectants, and other air contaminates.
May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB, AIDS, and Hepatitis.
May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Works in office areas, as well as throughout the nursing service area (i.e. drug rooms, nurses station, resident rooms, etc.).
May be exposed to disagreeable situations due to human interactions.
