Learning to write well is a process, so our conferences are one-on-one conversations where we assist with your writing concerns. Our mission is to improve writing skills one discussion at a time and, in turn, create more confident, capable writers at IU Southeast Writing Center.
Job Summary
The Composition Consultant will work enthusiastically as a team with the Director and the other employees of the Writing Center.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Provides face-to-face (F2F), e-tutoring, and online consulting for students, along with mentoring of peer consultants
- Greets clients, potential clients, and faculty in the Center.
- Works with individual students to help them gain competence and confidence in their written communication skills, through either F2F or online consultations.
- Determines client needs independently.
- Assists faculty when classes are in the Center.
- Manages social media presence for the Writing Center.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in English, Rhetoric, Composition, or closely related field
Required
- 1 year of training and experience in a writing center environment
- Training and/or experience working with English New Language (ENL) students
- Teaching experience in composition or writing across the curriculum
- 2 years training and experience
Required
- Demonstrated knowledge of composition pedagogy and writing center theory
- Experience with and commitment to tutoring writing and mentoring writing consultants
- Ability to work with a very diverse constituency
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to multitask
- Proven orientation towards quality service
Working Conditions / Demands
The position involves sedentary work as well as the ability to remain seated for extended periods of time. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

This is an in-person position.
Advertised Salary
$20.00 per hour
Work Hours
20 hours per week
Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.
