Qualifications
• Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving and criminal background that reflects a professional driver and which meets all contractual, local, state and federal requirements
• Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Duties and Responsibilities Must be 21 years of age
• High school graduate or equivalent with satisfactory driving record
• Genuine interest in and empathy for children
• Special Requirements A valid Indiana Commercial Driver's License and State of Indiana Standard licensure or certification (yellow card) is required
• Minimum Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions Physical Requirements Ability to pass DOT Physical
• Ability to pass DOT Drug & Alcohol test
• Ability to operate a variety of school buses and wheel chair lifts
• Ability to physically exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
• Ability to pass the Physical Fitness Certificate as outlined in IC 20-9.1-3-1
• Ability to pass the Physical Performance Standards and Measurements found in IC 20-9.1-4-4(b)
• Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time
• Mathematical Ability Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals and percentages
• Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication Ability to comprehend and correctly use a variety of informational documents including special transportation requests, operations manual, and extra-curricular field trip requests, etc
• Ability to effectively and accurately document student discipline sheets
• Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, maintains confidentiality of restricted information, and to follow instructions
• Ability to use bus radio
• Ability to use independent judgment, common sense, and principles of rational systems in the performance of tasks
• Ability to communicate effectively with the Manager, students, other bus drivers, mechanics, school personnel, administrators, parents, and the general public verbally and in writing
• Environmental Adaptability Ability to drive large vehicle in all types of weather

Responsibilities
• The purpose of this position is to operate various school buses in transporting pupils to and from school as well as related activities, and to perform other related work as required
• Maintains vehicle by performing routine pre and post inspections to determine equipment safety
• Brings to the attention of the transportation department any safety concerns along their route
• Ability to learn their route and to be consistently at each stop at the same time daily
• Keeps bus clean and trash can empty
• Maintains student discipline on the bus
• Check bus at end of each route to be sure there are no children left on the bus
• Updates bus route description including stop locations and times
• Must attend all in-service training classes and safety meetings as required by the corporation and state
• Ability to read and interpret schedules and forms as well as read and use maps
• Performs other related essential duties as required
• Supervisory Responsibilities ?
• Ability to review and coordinate the seating of riders on bus

Job Description

The purpose of this position is to operate various school buses in transporting pupils to and from school as well as related activities, and to perform other related work as required. The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Ability to receive and maintain a valid commercial class B driver's license with all appropriate endorsements and classifications and all other required licenses, permits and certificates.
  • Maintains vehicle by performing routine pre and post inspections to determine equipment safety.
  • Brings to the attention of the transportation department any safety concerns along their route.
  • Ability to learn their route and to be consistently at each stop at the same time daily.
  • Assists in training new drivers.
  • Keeps bus clean and trash can empty.
  • Maintains student discipline on the bus.
  • Check bus at end of each route to be sure there are no children left on the bus.
