Department Information

Marketing and Communications Department within the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs.

Job Summary

The Part-Time Student Writer works closely with the Content Specialist for marketing and communications to develop communications for OVPDEMA and its units and programs. Content will include post and pre-event stories.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Creates content to support OVPDEMA programs and events.
  • Researches, interviews, writes, and edits articles, blogs, and news releases.
  • Copyedits long-form publications, campaigns, and other communications.
  • Promotes upcoming OVPDEMA events, with the goal of attracting the appropriate audience.
  • Works with event organizers to determine appropriate event language and hashtags.
  • Positively represents OVPDEMA by effectively communicating IU pride to others.
  • Maintains professional standards of language and behavior in all posts.
  • Emails or stores copy on CITO, Google Drive, or other designated resource areas.
  • Accurately tracks time.
  • Attends team and project meetings.

EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University
  • Current GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • 2 years of college in English, journalism, fine arts, or related field; OR
  • 2 years of practical training with an apprenticeship program, vocational school, or training program.
Preferred
  • 2 years of experience in journalism or communications.

  • Ability to maintain professional standards of language, with appropriate grammar and spelling.
  • Ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Able to build and maintain rapport with faculty, staff, student, parents, representatives, and community.
  • Able to work flexible hours.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana

Advertised Salary

$14.50 per hour.

Work Hours

10 - 15 hours per week, Sunday - Saturday with day and evening flexible hours.

Duties and schedules are flexible as assigned by the supervisor based on programs, events, and needs of OVPDEMA.

Not to exceed a maximum of more than 29 hours per week across all positions of employment held with Indiana University.
