Department Information

Capital Planning and Facilities (CPF) works to ensure that IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable while supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university.

A unit within Capital Planning and Facilities, the Landscape Architecture division designs functional and inspiring outdoor space. Landscape Architecture plans, designs, and manages all site and landscape improvements for new construction and the renovation of existing facilities at Indiana University. Landscape Architecture staff also help create master, land use, and open space plans that guide the future development of all IU campuses.

Job Summary

The landscape analyst collects, documents, organizes, maintains, and analyzes site and landscape assets within the University-wide system (all campuses).

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Performs field collection of site and landscape asset data using software and other field measurement equipment.
  • Documents and organizes assets meeting University standards and collaborate with related units to maintain current and accurate data.
  • Conducts complex GIS data analysis; designs and develops various data modeling (maps and CAD drawings) and/or data analysis reports; implements quality control procedures for all deliverables.
  • Coordinates and supports multiple campus GIS Basemaps and data, associated relational databases and related interactive mapping applications.
  • Conducts geospatial analysis, develop conversion strategies, and apply topology.
  • Utilizes raster and vector-based GIS models.
  • Coordinates and manages the maintenance and production of campus base map in GIS and CAD.
  • Designs, queries and produces custom maps as requested for all IU campuses.
  • Evaluates and categorizes inventory collection priorities. Documents procedures used for collection processes and revises as needed to stay current with overall departmental goals and objectives, customer needs and new technology.
  • Reviews and coordinates CAD/GIS deliverables to ensure they are complete and documents are routed to correct unit for inclusion in map updates.
  • Researches and stays informed on CAD and GIS-related software and technologies.
  • Recommends initiatives to ensure IU remains effective in its use of graphical information and work with users to leverage the full potential of the data being collected.
  • Communicates regularly with internal and external stakeholders to exchange data, resolve questions, and share information as needed.
General Responsibilities
  • Conducts complex GIS data analysis; designs and develops various data modeling (charts, graphs, maps) and/or data analysis reports; implements quality control procedures for all deliverables.
  • Develops, maintains, updates, and monitors complex GIS datasets and databases; ensures data integrity and data quality control.
  • Performs complex data review, conversion, and transformation to support GIS research and projects.
  • Responds to requests for GIS information; designs and creates complex custom reports, maps and other electronic information using GIS systems; communicates regularly with internal and external stakeholders to exchange data, resolve questions, and share information as needed.
  • Ensures proper documentation related to GIS data as applicable.
  • May provide GIS software and other related training as requested/applicable.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in geographic information systems, geology, information/data science, or related scientific field. Landscape Architecture, geography or a related field
  • Master's degree geographic information science, geography, landscape architecture, environmental studies or related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of data management and analysis or related experience using GIS applications and software
Preferred
  • 2 years of experience in capital asset management using geographic information systems (GIS) and computed aided drafting (CAD) technologies.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

  • General understanding of field measurement techniques using GIS field applications
  • Software expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, Relational Database such as Microsoft SQL Server, Access, ESRI ArcGIS, and Autodesk AutoCAD

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
