The Vice President for International Affairs and the teams of staff in OVPIA's offices are the stewards of international activity across all campuses of Indiana University. We provide strategic leadership and advocacy for all international programs and projects and coordinate the resources necessary to sustain their growth. Within IU Global, the Office of International Services (OIS) is dedicated to helping international students and scholars achieve their goals. Our staff recruit, admit, and enroll international students from all over the world. We provide social and cultural programming and visa- and immigration-related advising among other assistance to all international students and scholars. Job Summary

  • Serves as primary point of contact in-person and by phone and email for international students and scholars, academic departments, and other clients with requests for services and information related to immigration regulations and OIS procedures.
  • With guidance from the student and scholar advising teams, researches and responds to a broad range of inquiries from students and scholars, including relevant immigration policies, documents, and regulations related to full-time enrollment, practical training and employment authorizations, SSN applications, travel, expiring immigration documents, scholar check-in, etc.
  • Works with appropriate staff to ensure that client needs are met in the most efficient way possible.
  • Collects and administers initial review of various documents and e-forms for international students, scholars, and departments.
  • Makes judgment calls on the proper level of service, is sensitive to deadlines and the timing issues related to immigration regulations, and assists in appointment scheduling as appropriate.
  • Maintains working knowledge of immigration regulations and procedures.
  • Monitors and processes a variety of e-forms and other requests from international students and scholars.
  • Troubleshoots issues clients encounter and explains how to navigate the systems, use checklists, and submit e-forms.
  • Assists in training of new staff on university and office policies and procedures, and basic immigration information, as appropriate (or as assigned).
  • Provides general administrative support to the office and other special projects and duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of related office experience.
Preferred
  • 2 years of experience handling complex customer service situations in a university setting.
  • Experience with federal regulations governing international students and scholars.
SKILLS

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
