Department Information

The Office of Career Services, in the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B), is expanding our team of talented career coaches to partner with students at all levels of their career development, from exploratory and pre-major students to those pursuing undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees, in addition to our alumni. Our mission is to offer exceptional career services in a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment in which each student can develop a meaningful career path. We strive to provide career advising, resources, programs, and employer connections to students and alumni that will enable them to become contributing members of the workforce and community. Located on the flagship campus of the Indiana University system, SPH-B has more than 4,000 students, 220 faculty, and 130 staff in 5 departments (Applied Health Science, Environmental and Occupational Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Health and Wellness Design, and Kinesiology).

Job Summary

The Career Services Consultant will focus on career coaching of students at all levels but with particular emphasis on the graduate student population (master's and doctoral students) and alumni. The individual in this role will engage positively with students and alumni to assist them with personal reflection, career exploration, goal setting, experiential learning, written application materials, job search strategies, interview skills, professional etiquette, and career management.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Coaches SPH-B undergraduate and graduate students to assist them in meeting their career objectives.
  • Conducts both individual and/or group coaching sessions. Assists in planning career strategies for individual students and provides feedback and encouragement.
  • Directs students towards available resources and provides expertise on networking and connecting with professionals in different industries and stays up to date on industry/functional requirements of career roles.
  • Assists in programs and events delivered by the SPH-B Office of Career Services team. Work is generally conducted within typical business hours but may occasionally have evening or weekend activities.
  • Interfaces with department faculty and may present on career development topics at workshops, class presentations, and seminars.
  • Works with Career Services team members in student and alumni communications and outreach campaigns to increase the reporting of SPH-B graduates' first destination outcomes.
  • Contributes to physical and digital resources specific to equipping SPH-B students, including creating new materials as needed.
  • Success in this role requires a deep commitment to developing others and the ability to adapt and learn while working independently and in teams in a virtual or in-person environment.
General Responsibilities
  • Assists with professional and career development of students and alumni through career assessments, exploration, decision-making, goal setting, and planning. Focuses efforts on resume building, interview skill development, mock interview, and job search preparation and navigation; graduate school application and interview preparation through counseling appointments and consultations.
  • Develops and delivers workshops on career development which include networking strategies, interviewing, resume and cover letter writing skills, portfolio development, and using the internet for career search.
  • Supports faculty and students with career exploration, internships, job shadow experiences, presentations, and facilitation of resources available for career development.
  • Serves on various community and institutional committees to build partnerships across the university and among comparable universities to build knowledge base.
  • Assists in the process of collecting and tracking data for office assessment purposes. Utilizes data to assist in the creation of office objectives and goals to meet the needs of the student population.
  • Works through issues with a variety of stakeholders: students, employers, alumni, and faculty. Identifies and capitalizes on connections between groups of stakeholders and leverage those connections in unique ways through events and interactions
  • May provide guidance and delegate administrative tasks to other career services staff.
  • May make process recommendations for improved operational efficiency.

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
