Department Information

Bloomington's 1940-acre campus is often considered one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation and is set in USA Today's Best College Town in America. IU Bloomington is home to close to 43,000 undergraduate and graduate students and over 19,000 faculty, staff, and part-time employees.

Campus Bus provides transportation to over 3 million rides a year and operates a 6-route system with approximately 30 buses, 50 bus operators, 4 mechanics, and a management team. It has a long-standing partnership with the local transit system, further extending its reach and resources.

Campus Bus is a business unit within Auxiliary Business Services (ABS). ABS operate in a shared services model that supports finance, human resources, payroll, and marketing needs of Campus Bus.

Job Summary

  • Operates a public transportation vehicle in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining positive customer relations with passengers, drivers of other vehicles on the street, and pedestrians.
  • Monitors the safety and mechanical operation of the public transportation vehicle assigned by constant attention to safety and mechanical devices and warning signals, such as the following (for the purposes of illustration only): the speedometer, water temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, engine warning lights and buzzers, etc.
  • Operates mechanical and electronic devices on the public transportation vehicle, including front and rear doors, wheelchair lift or ramp, wheelchair securement devices, bus kneeling device, radio, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) devices, passenger counters, destination signs, public address systems, heating and ventilating equipment, safety devices and warning lights, etc.
  • Conforms to all University, local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations applicable to public transportation operations, including (for the purposes of illustration only), performing the following: pre-and post-trip inspections of the public transportation vehicle assigned, ADA required announcements and assistance for passengers with disabilities, etc.
  • Prepares logs, forms, and reports on the ridership and operations of the assigned public transportation vehicle.
  • May be assigned other duties not related to operating a public transportation vehicle when their services are not needed for driving, such as clerical, courier, public transit information
Qualifications

This position is posted at the Intermediate Career Level but may be filled at the Foundational Career Level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the qualifications for each level listed below.

Intermediate Level Requirements

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 1 year of experience driving public transportation vehicles
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • CDL license class B with passenger and air brake endorsements and ability to be insured by Indiana University. These are Safety Sensitive positions as defined by the Federal Transit Administration and are therefore subject to all current and future FTA Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations Upon Date of Hire

Foundational Level Requirements

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • Completion of the bus operator training program prior to operating a bus in regular service
  • Must be able to successfully complete required classroom and on the street training program during the probationary period
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Candidate must independently obtain CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit), class B, with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements, and insurable by Indiana University. The training must be completed in an 8-week time frame. These are safety sensitive positions as defined by the Federal Transit Administration and therefore subject to all current and future FTA drug and alcohol testing requirements upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands

Intermediate

This role requires stationary positioning for long periods of time. It also requires a CDL-B or chauffer's level driver's license issued by the State of Indiana and the ability to be insured by Indiana University.

This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds The person in this role must be able to perform the essential tasks with or without an accommodation.

Foundational

This role requires stationary positioning for long periods of time. It also requires a commitment to earning a CDL-B driver's license issued by the State of Indiana and employee must be insurable by Indiana University.
