Purpose Statement
The Night Custodian is responsible for the overall cleanliness of the District's buildings, equipment and furnishings. Ensures that cleaning supplies are stocked, equipment is functional and the building is operational and ready for the next shift.

Reports to: Building Operations Supervisor

Essential Functions

  • Reports to the assigned school/facility on a daily basis as determined by the Building Operations Supervisor.
  • Cleans the assigned facilities and/or grounds (sweeps, mops, and/or vacuums floors, dusts and cleans offices, classrooms and other work areas; strips, restores and polishes floors as scheduled, collects and removes waste, washes walls, windows and doors etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness and safety.
  • Disinfects required surfaces and fixtures.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment.
  • Monitors students and staff in and around work areas for the purpose of preventing injuries and ensuring site safety.
  • Performs summer maintenance/cleaning to prepare the facilities for the next school year.
  • Participates in training for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Performs minor maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture and fixtures for the purpose of ensuring proper function and usability of items (ceiling tiles, filters, light bulbs etc.)
  • Clears snow and salts walkways around the building for the purpose of maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness and efficiency.
  • Responsible for securing the building and ensuring that all doors and windows are shut and latched.
  • Wears the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and uses all safety measures when performing any task.
  • Performs any other tasks that may be requested at the building he/she is assigned to for that shift.
  • Promote the safety, health, and comfort of the students and employees.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment and materials used in industrial maintenance; adhering to safety practices; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. The employee is required to have communication skills including the ability to write reports and
correspondence consistent with the duties of the job; ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information; the ability to read, analyze and interpret information; and display courtesy and tact with respect to others.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of industrial cleaning including floor and carpet; basic tools for minor repairs; and safety practices and procedures.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; and meeting deadlines and schedules.

Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others. Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 75% walking, and 20% standing. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level is usually moderate.

The employee shall also maintain confidentiality regarding students, promote a harassment free environment, have the ability to learn and utilize machinery and equipment especially as the same are upgraded, and perform duties in full compliance with all District and Board of Education policies.

Experience Job related experience is preferred.

Education High School diploma or equivalent.
