Responsibilities:
Patient Preparation
Pre-exam Interviews: Greet patients and explain the CT procedure. Ask about medical history, allergies (especially to contrast media), and any conditions that might affect the scan (e.g., pregnancy).
Positioning: Position patients correctly on the CT scanner table for accurate imaging. This may involve adjusting for specific body parts or organs to be scanned.
Patient Monitoring: During the scan, monitor the patient's comfort and safety, ensuring they remain still to avoid motion artifacts.
2. Operating CT Equipment
Scanner Setup: Prepare the CT machine by selecting appropriate scan protocols based on the patient's condition and the physician's orders.
Image Acquisition: Perform CT scans by manipulating the machine controls to obtain high-quality, diagnostic images. This may include both traditional CT scans and advanced techniques like CT angiography or 3D reconstructions.
Contrast Administration: Administer contrast agents (oral or intravenous) when necessary to enhance imaging. This often requires understanding the correct dosage, timing, and monitoring for adverse reactions.
3. Image Quality and Documentation
Reviewing Images: Ensure the images obtained are of high quality and meet the diagnostic requirements. If needed, adjust the machine settings and repeat scans to improve image clarity.
Documentation: Record patient information, imaging parameters, and any other relevant data in the medical record or imaging system.
Quality Control: Perform regular quality assurance (QA) checks on the CT scanner to ensure it is operating correctly and within safety standards.
4. Patient Care and Communication
Safety Measures: Follow protocols for radiation safety, ensuring that the patient receives the lowest possible dose of radiation necessary for the scan.
Comfort and Reassurance: Provide emotional support, especially for anxious or claustrophobic patients, and ensure they are comfortable throughout the procedure.
Post-Procedure Instructions: Inform patients about any post-scan care or follow-up steps, such as drinking fluids if contrast was used.
5. Collaboration and Communication
Team Coordination: Work closely with radiologists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the patient receives proper care before, during, and after the scan.
Reporting Issues: Communicate any technical problems with the scanner or patient safety concerns to appropriate staff members.
6. Radiation Safety and Compliance
Radiation Protection: Adhere to the "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA) principle to minimize radiation exposure to patients and staff.
Compliance with Regulations: Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, as well as federal and state regulations related to radiation safety and patient care.
7. Continuous Education
Professional Development: Stay up-to-date on new CT technologies, scan techniques, and advancements in imaging protocols.
Certifications: Maintain required certifications (e.g., ARRT certification) and participate in continuing education as mandated by licensing or employer.
8. Additional Duties (depending on the setting)
Specialized Imaging: Perform specialized CT exams like CT angiography, cardiac CT, or virtual colonoscopy, if required.
Emergency Procedures: In some cases, CT techs may be involved in emergency procedures, such as trauma imaging, requiring quick decision-making and rapid scanning.
