Job description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reviews shop drawings, design drawings, and specifications for compliance with structural engineering principles and applicable policies, codes, and ordinances.
  • Prepares design drawings, calculations, and specifications for projects of small to moderate size and ensures compliance with structural engineering principles and applicable policies, codes, and ordinances.
  • Coordinates structural design and analysis of rapid transit elevated structures, bridges, buildings and related facilities.
  • Conducts inspections of work sites to assess project status, identify potential problems, ensure compliance with project documents, standards and codes, and recommends solutions to problems that will keep projects within scope and budget.
  • Conducts inspections of existing infrastructure to identify potential problems, ensure compliance with standards and codes, and recommend solutions to identified problems.
  • Research information to provide logical comprehensive solutions to moderately complex design, and construction problems.
  • Maintains project records and prepares comprehensive reports on inspections, investigations, and tests.
  • Assists senior level engineers in planning, developing, and coordinating projects.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering with a Structural Engineering concentration or a related field plus three (3) years of experience in Structural Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to this position.
  • Must be a registered Engineer-in-Training, having passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.
  • Certification for Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges (NHI) preferred.
  • Valid State of Illinois Driver's License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires remaining stationary for extended periods of time and constantly operating a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Must be able to move and maneuver up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to traverse track on elevated structures, in subway tunnels and at grade conditions, after proper safety training.
  • Must be able to operate an aerial lift, after proper safety training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Detailed knowledge of Structural Engineering principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of construction materials, methods, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of municipal codes and ordinances as applied to the design, construction, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure, track structures, and facilities.
  • Good research, attention to detail, and problem solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good critical thinking skills to assess how one change can affect the entire project.
  • Intermediate skill using Auto Cad to create drawings for permitting.
  • Intermediate skill using personal computer, engineering applications, and data management software.
  • Ability to apply structural engineering knowledge to moderately complex structural engineering problems with versatility, judgment, and perception.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate moderately complex structural engineering problems and provide practical and cost effective solutions.
  • Ability to work well with others.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • General office environment
  • Travels within the Chicago Metropolitan area when conducting field inspections and meetings.
  • Subject to prevailing weather conditions when conducting field inspections.
  • Occasionally required to travel out of the Chicago Metropolitan area to meet with suppliers, manufacturers, complete training, etc.
  • Occasionally exposed to electrically energized conductors, moving trains, and other hazardous conditions.

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS UTILIZED

  • Standard office equipment
  • Computer - including programs, e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Database, Auto Cad, calculators, local/national codes, CTA and national standards, STAAD-PRO.
  • Ladders, fall-protection harness, aerial lifts, and measuring tools.
