Job description

Duties You will perform all types of general machinist work involving machine tool operation assembly, installation, and bench work required in the fabrication and repair of mechanical parts and assemblies during prototype and engineering development phase. You will program and operate numerical control (NC) and computer-numerical control machine tools (CNC). You will effectively plan the methods and proper sequence of operations to follow in fabricating the required parts. You will commonly work to tolerances of .001 inch and occasionally work to tolerances of .0005 inch. You will use precision measuring instruments such as: micrometers, dial indicators, precision gauge blocks, vernier calipers and height gages, and special tolerance gauges in setting up the checking parts or assemblies being manufactured. Performs general bench work such as: chipping, filing, grinding, tapping, reaming, scraping, lapping, and polishing as required in the fitting and assembling of parts into completed assemblies. The Screen-Out Element for this position is: I have the ability to perform common tasks including: Able to run machines/grinds metals including metal alloys and non-metallic parts. Program and load existing numerical control programs into machines and does set-ups including securing work piece in chuck, faceplate, and mill table. Perform the more difficult work under minimal guidance of a senior machinist or supervisor. The individual checks his/her own work using tools common to the machinist trade including micrometers, indicators, and Vernier's. Mastery of established operating procedures, safety regulations, and practices is expected. Physical Effort The employee works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching, and arm movement. Some work may be occasionally performed in cramped areas, on temporary platforms, or overhead. The employee frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifts heavier items with assistance. Working Conditions The employee usually works in machine shop areas or other enclosed areas which are sometimes noisy, dirty, or unheated. The employee is exposed to eye, skin, nose, and lung irritations from coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and to possible injuries and burns from flying metal chips, abrasive particles, and hot metal. The employee is also frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts and serious injuries to hands and fingers from accidents while operating machines. To minimize or eliminate the effects of some of these conditions, the machinist follows numerous safety practices and wears or uses various protective devices such as machine tool shields, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, face shields, hearing protection devices, and respirators. These devices may be uncomfortable and may be worn for long periods of time. Salary will be increased by the applicable cost-of-living allowance (COLA), which is subject to change without notice. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
