Job description

Duties Serve as a crew member involved with a variety of prevention, detection, wildfire suppression, pre-suppression, and prescribed burning duties. Uses wildland fire related tools and equipment. Assists in directing activities in a complex fire environment both wildfire and prescribed fire and helps to train other participants. Independently, or as part of a team, carries out specialized assignment such as backfire or burnout, mobile and stationary engine or other specialized equipment operation, construction of Helispots, specialized Helitack operations and hover hookup Maintains and monitors conditions of firefighting equipment, fire cache warehouse and supplies, Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS), fire buckets. to include operational status of the firefighting vehicle to insure operational readiness of all equipment Performs wildfire prevention activities such as patrolling to gage fire potential and occurrence, distributing literature, explaining wildfire prevention program to the public and base populace and preparing fire reports. Requirements Conditions of Employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. This is an Army Drug Testing Designated Position (TDP), must submit to and pass random drug tests. Incumbent is subject to annual medical examination and must pass the Work Capacity Test (WCT) for arduous positions. Incumbent is subject to recall 24 hours per day, seven days a week, in case of emergency, to suppress range or forest fires. Subject to weekend shift assignments. Must satisfactory complete training from the installation fire department on the operation of vehicles and equipment in support of fire fighting activities for this position. (AR-420-90) This position may require you to work overtime. This position requires you to work shifts including weekends, evenings, and holidays. You occupy a position that is considered essential to support DA's mobilization and wartime mission during periods of increasing tension or mobilization. Your position is considered emergency essential because (1) no qualified and immediate replacement exists; and (2) having it vacant would (a) impair the effective operation of essential military support systems, or (b) adversely impact the combat mission of deployed forces. Failure to remain in your position may result in separation for the efficiency of the Federal Service. OR I have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science OR a combination of specialized experience and education - only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. Planning and Evaluating Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04). Education Full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science.
