Job description
Position Summary:
The Chief Estimator leads the pre-construction estimating efforts for both private and public projects. This role oversees the preparation of detailed bids and proposals, ensuring accuracy and competitiveness throughout the entire bid cycle. The Chief Estimator collaborates closely with the team and external partners to deliver precise estimates, regularly evaluates project costs, and adjusts based on financial analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Management:
Lead and mentor the estimating team.
Implement best practices for accuracy and efficiency.
Coordinate with departments for smooth project transitions.
Conduct team meetings to review progress and strategies.
Estimating and Bidding:
Manage comprehensive cost estimates for projects.
Review plans to ensure competitive and efficient bids.
Innovate in bidding approaches and identify cost-saving opportunities.
Oversee bid processes and evaluate subcontractor/vendor proposals.
Ensure accuracy and completeness in bid packages and comparisons.
Collaboration and Communication:
Collaborate with stakeholders to align on project scope, budget, and schedule.
Provide detailed reports to management and maintain strong industry relationships.
Participate in meetings to gather insights and support business development.
Report and Project Documentation:
Maintain thorough records of estimates, bids, and costs.
Ensure compliance with company standards and regulations.
Present detailed reports and keep documentation updated.
Cost Management and Control:
Prepare timely estimates within budget.
Identify cost-saving and value engineering opportunities.
Track project costs for continuous improvement.
Maintain accuracy and enforce quality control procedures.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field
Minimum of 10 years of experience in commercial construction estimating, with at least five years in a leadership role
Must be a critical thinker at all times, with high levels of accuracy and efficiency
Commitment to continuous self and team development
Detail-oriented with strong technical expertise
Capable of managing multiple projects with accuracy and efficiency
Effective leadership and collaborative team player
Excellent in communication, analysis, organization, and problem-solving
Able to work independently with minimal supervision
Proficient in takeoff and estimating software (e.g., On-screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, Quick Bid)
Able and willing to work overtime and under pressure as needed to meet tight bidding deadlines
OSHA 30 certified within the last five years or the ability to become certified/recertified before being hired
Preferred Requirements:
Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or similar certification
Mechanical estimating experience
Private sector estimating experience
Experience with vertical commercial construction (office buildings, retail spaces, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions)
Knowledge of local building codes and regulations
