Job description

Our client, a leading company in municipal infrastructure construction in Central FL, is seeking a motivated and experienced Estimator. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Building Construction or at least 3-5 years of experience in cost estimating, project management, or a related field in underground utilities construction.

Position: Estimator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Analyze Documentation: Review blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates.
  • Requirements Review: Determine labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor needs, and prepare itemized lists.
  • Bid Documents: Read, understand, and interpret project plans, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Pre-Bid Meetings: Attend pre-bid meetings as required.
  • Cost Computation: Compute cost factors and prepare estimates for planning, organizing, scheduling work, and preparing bids.
  • Estimate Review: Lead estimate review meetings with other estimators and the Estimating Manager.
  • Consultation: Consult with clients, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors to discuss estimates and resolve issues.
  • Constructability Analysis: Analyze plans for constructability issues and resolve them with colleagues.
  • Bid Questions: Develop and submit questions to resolve bid document issues before submission.
  • Cost Analysis: Analyze completed projects to compare estimated costs to actual costs, adjusting future estimates as needed.
  • Process Improvement: Recommend improvements to cost estimating procedures to reduce discrepancies.
  • Cost Trends: Identify cost trends to aid in cost reduction and process improvements.
  • Project Pursuit: Assist the Estimating Manager in determining which municipal projects to pursue.
  • Material Take-Offs: Execute material take-offs and determine production rates based on project documentation and historical costs.
  • HeavyBid Software: Enter projected costs into HeavyBid software, ensuring accuracy, and prepare final estimates for approval.
  • Project Handoff: Prepare estimates for the project management team if awarded, and conduct handoff meetings.

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Certifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Building Construction from a four-year college or university.
  • Extensive knowledge of construction practices, procedures, and techniques, as well as local, state, and federal building codes.
  • Strong understanding of construction project contract administration.
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience in cost estimating, project management, or related fields.
  • Proficiency with HeavyBid by HCSS, database software, internet software, inventory software, project management software, spreadsheet software, and word processing software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Proactive, deadline-oriented, analytical with excellent mathematical ability.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:


  • Regularly required to sit for extended periods; frequently required to move around the office.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
