Job description
Position Summary:
The Senior Director of Medication Management is a key pharmacy leader for Orlando Health (OH) with specific oversight for inpatient and hospital-based outpatient pharmacy medication management programs.
The Senior Director will maintain expert working knowledge of The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG), Department of Public Health (DPH), American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP), Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) medication-related and pharmacy practice standards and metrics and relates them to departmental and organizational policies and procedures.
Oversight of pharmacy education, research, formulary management, clinical pharmacy services, medication safety, medication use policies and procedures, clinical management of medication shortages, medication diversion program.
Key Responsibilities
Participates in setting the strategy, planning, implementation, and development of medication use practices, policies & procedures for hospital-based pharmacy programs, across Orlando Health.
Collaborates with Hospital leaders, site pharmacy leaders, nursing leadership, and physicians to drive the provision of contemporary pharmacy clinical models of care.
Oversees on a system level, clinical based pharmacy meetings such as but not limited to, Pharmacy and Therapeutics,
Medication Safety Council, Pharmacy Clinical Committee, and other interdisciplinary Councils.
Coordinates all clinical pharmacy services and programs to help obtain desirable patient outcomes with safe, appropriate, and cost-effective medication therapies, promoting standardization and advancing clinical pharmacy practices.
Responsibilities:
Assists the Chief Pharmacy Officer and the AVP of Hospital Pharmacy with the development and implementation of pharmacy strategic initiatives which are designed to optimize patient care and enhance cost effectiveness.
Manages the centralized Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and develops education regarding formulary additions.
Works with procurement in assisting with all cost analysis for formulary considerations.
Maintains and reviews the enterprise system formulary to help ensure the most cost-effective therapies are available.
Identifies and implements quality improvement programs and continuous quality assurance initiatives to advance the medication use systems and promote optimal patient outcomes.
Facilitates the standardization of medication use practices across the organization including formulary management and editing/updating policies and procedures.
Provides direct support to the Medication Safety Council to ensure the safe usage of medication throughout the health system.
Coordinates the research and reporting of medication adverse events across the enterprise with analytic summaries.
Works with IT to ensure that medication builds within Epic are correct and appropriate
Participates in the pharmacy's educational affiliations with external academic institutions.
Identifies targets for and participates in in-service education for medical, nursing, pharmacy, and support staff aimed at correcting problems in drug utilization. Precepts pharmacy students and pharmacy residents on rotation.
Serves as a clinical liaison to assist in the management of drug expense to budget by monitoring drug utilization, identifying opportunities for improvement and initiating cost avoidance programs to achieve planned savings and/or cost avoidance.
Works with pharmacy directors, clinical coordinators, and pharmacists at each facility in the delivery of pharmaceutical care and appropriate use of clinical workflow software.
Participates in the in the development of the pharmacy services strategic plans to ensure alignment with OH priorities.
Participates in development and execution of monitoring metrics for the category's quality/safety, operational efficiency, clinical effectiveness, and financial performance.
Ensures the implementation, alignment and standardization of drug use initiatives and pharmaceutical organizational policies, procedures, and related forms in the hospital-based practice setting.
Manages complex interdepartmental and interdisciplinary relationships to assure collaboration and effectiveness.
Qualifications:
Education
Bachelor's Degree required.
Doctor of Pharmacy degree required.
MHA, MBA, MS strongly desired.
Licensure/Certification
Licensed Pharmacist in the state of FL or eligible for FL licensure (must be obtained within 90 days of hire).
Licensed Consultant Pharmacist in the state of FL is preferred.
Experience
A minimum of three (3) years of senior health system pharmacy leadership experience in a progressive, complex health system overseeing multiple locations is required.
Seven (7) years of progressive work experience in hospital and clinical pharmacy services, leading formulary & medication use, is required.
